A summary of the first week of the Tour of Italy 2014

A summary of the first week of the Tour of Italy 2014After the summary of the 3 Irish stages of the Tour of Italy 2014, velowire.com now looks back on the first week of the Giro d'Italia 2014 on this second rest day of the Italian race.

Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEDGE) arrived in Italy with the pink jersey on his shoulders and the Australian rider managed to keep this precious leader's jersey of the general classification until the start of the first mountain stage last Saturday. Since the finish of that stage, his compatriot Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) wears this jersey and he thus still has to defend it for 12 stages starting tomorrow.

The ultima tappa of the Giro d'Italia 2013 for Mark Cavendish, Vincenzo Nibali in pink

The ultima tappa of the Giro d'Italia 2013 for Mark Cavendish, Vincenzo Nibali in pinkToday was the 21st stage, the ultimo tappa thus of this Giro d'Italia 2013. A Giro with much less animation than some of those we've seen a few years ago but a Giro which was mostly impacted by the weather.

The last stage was, as often in a Grand Tour, without much interest, except of course to know the name of the winner of the last bunch sprint in the streets of Brescia and it was, not really surprisingly, the man whose nickname (well, at least in Italy) is the fastest man in the world, Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).

The summary of the 21st stage of the Tour of Italy 2013: Riese Pio X > Brescia

Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) came to the start completely dressed in pink this morning and his team mates of the Astana team all had pink handlebar tape. The riders went off in a real slow tempo for the last 197 kilometers of this ...

Vincenzo Nibali again first, in the snow on top of the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013

Vincenzo Nibali again first, in the snow on top of the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013A modified stage which, thanks to its non modified final part with a mountain top finish gave a beautiful finish today in the Giro d'Italia 2013. In this very last climb the whole stage got turned around and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) again showed why he's the one to go home in pink from Brescia after the final finish of this race tomorrow.

The summary of the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013: Silandro > Tre Cime di Lavaredo

With the abandon of Robert Gesink (Blanco Pro Cycling Team) during the improvised rest day yesterday (following the cancellation of the 19th stage) and the suspension of Danilo di Luca (Vini Fantini-Selle Italia) following a positive test for EPO a few days before the start of the Giro, 169 riders came to the start of this forelast stage of the Tour of Italy 2013 in Silandro.

The modified race route of the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013: Silandro - Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The modified race route of the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013: Silandro - Tre Cime di LavaredoAfter the the initial announcement of a modification of the 19th stage which was finally followed by a complete cancellation of yesterday's stage because the snow on top of the lower mountains on the modified race route was still too important to let the stage go off, the forelast stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013 today will also follow a modified race route.

In this article you'll find the new race route, on Google Maps and downloadable in Google Earth, the new time- and route schedule and the new profile of the 20th stage of the Tour of Italy 2013 which will take place between Silandro (Schlanders) and Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Auronzo).
