Vincenzo Nibali shows who's the leader in the cronoscalata of the Giro d'Italia 2013

A particular stage in the Giro d'Italia 2013, a stage which was ridden as a cronoscalata as Italian people say, which means a mountain time trial.

The occasion for Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) why he's the leader in the general classification which he already seemed to have won since the last few stages. Indeed, the Italian rider wins this stage and takes 2'36" more on his first competitor, Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team).

The summary of the 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013: Mori > Polsa

The start ramp of this mountain time trial was located in the velodrome of Mori for a climb split into two parts: 6% over the first part, a short slightly descending split and a second part going up at 7 to 8% average.

The first rider to really set a reference time on this race route was Steve Cummings (BMC Racing Team) who finished the stage in 47'08". Eros Capecchi of the winning team in the last 3 stages, Movistar, was the first to improve his time, by 13 seconds, followed about twenty riders later by Stef Clement (Blanco Pro Cycling Team), in 46'05".

Damiano Caruso (Cannondale Pro Cycling) takes off an important additional part of the reference time of the Dutch rider by ending in 45'49", 16 seconds faster than Clement.

When Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) passes the intermediate timing point on the slightly descending split of the stage with the best time, it already becomes clear that the Spanish rider managed to optimally use his climber's facilities to set a good time in this stage. So good even that he still has the best time at the finish, taking of 22 more seconds from Damiano Caruso's time.

Rain came by to annoy the riders but that didn't keep Rafel Majka (Team Saxo-Tinkoff), number two in the young riders classification of this Giro at the start of this stage, to set a very good time, 27 seconds behind Sanchez. With this time he again flips with Carlos Betancur (AG2R La Mondiale) who finished 7 seconds behind him since the gap between the two young riders was only 5 seconds.

While Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) sets a deceiving time 1'38" behind Sanchez, the real fireworks come from the pink jersey himself, since Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) takes off no less than 58 seconds from Samuel Sanchez on this difficult race route!

With this stage victory, he creates even bigger gaps in the general classification and, except if he has any trouble, he's now quite sure of the overall victory in this Giro d'Italia 2013 already!

For the young riders, Rafel Majka (Team Saxo-Tinkoff) and Carlos Betancur (AG2R La Mondiale) again switch places on top of this classification and their time gap is now only 2 seconds! (while the time gaps with the other riders grow a little bit more)

Bon, ce qui devait arriver arriva : le dyptique montagneux final - mis deux jours avant l'arrivée pour préserver le suspense (et l'audimat) à tout prix - ne servira à rien. Nibali a déjà gagné, et aujourd'hui il explose ses adversaires. On pourrait s'étonner qu'un coureur aussi impuissant lors du Tour de France 2012 gagne aussi facilement un grand Tour si seulement l'opposition était d'un autre niveau. Evans, Sanchez et Scarponi sont en fin de carrière et Uran n'est pour l'instant qu'un bon second couteau. Encore une fois, en ce moment sur la planète cyclisme, deux - Contador et Froome - voire 3 avec Rodriguez, sont de vrais bons grimpeurs (Schleck a disparu et Quintana est encore trop jeune). L'année dernière sur le Tour, il n'y avait aucun de ces 5-là (Froome était ce qu'on va appeler une "présence évanescente"). Le parcours était ce qu'il était (moi, je continue à le défendre), mais avec un tel plateau une course intéressante était inenvisageable. D'ailleurs la Vuelta était mal tracée et on a vu ce que ça a donné. Voyons le bon côté des choses : la 100ème Grande boucle s'annonce passionnante.

Nibali a bien essayé d'attaquer dans le Tour 2012, notamment dans l'étape du Grand Colombier, mais comment réussir sur un tel parcours!?

@Dom,
Nibali a en effet essayé sur le Grand Colombier... mais en descente ! Je ne sais pas si vous appelez ça une attaque, moi pas.

Sur le reste des étapes de montagne :
- La Planche des Belles filles : course de côte de 6 km, écrémage au train, zéro attaques avant les 200 derniers mètres ;
- Porrentruy : néant, alors que l'étape était magnifique ;
- La Toussuire (belle étape sur le papier): Evans tente de loin mais n'a pas les jambes. Dans la dernière montée, toutes les attaques sont facilement contrées par Froome qui se serait envolé s'il n'était pas dans l'équipe de Wiggins ;
- Foix (pas très bien tracée mais avec Péguère qui pouvait faire une différence) : l'étape soporifique par excellence, Cavendish grimpe le port de Lers en tête (!), et Péguère ne donne rien. Je me rappelle cette parole des commentateurs de France TV "on ne pourra pas reprocher à Evans de ne pas avoir tenté aujourd'hui" (pour rappel, tout ce que fait Evans, c'est se placer en tête pour aborder Péguère). Finalement, des clous sur la route viendront enfoncer le clou (si j'ose dire) du bilan très faible de cette étape ;
- Luchon : Evans cède dès (le pourtant facile) Aspin, et Nibali tente un peu dans Peyresourde, mais Froome répond, évidemment ;
- Peyragudes (étape bien tracée) : Nibali est dans un mauvais jour, alors il fait rouler son équipe pour bluffer, tandis qu'il faut attendre qu'un grimpeur (presque) offensif, j'ai nommé Jurgen Van den Broeck, tente un petit coup à 5 km de l'arrivée, évidemment contré par Froome qui se serait encore une fois envolé s'il n'avait pas dû garder son leader sur son porte-bagages ;

Conclusion : le parcours n'était pas parfait, c'est sûr, mais Nibali a très peu tenté de déstabiliser la Sky, il n'avait pas les jambes. Sur ce Tour, la hiérarchie était claire :
1) Froome
2) loin derrière Wiggins
3) Nibali
Comme Wiggins n'est pas un attaquant, que les 100 km d'ITT lui garantissaient un net succès et que Froome était bridé, Nibali étant inférieur (même en montagne) à ces 2-là, on ne pouvait avoir qu'un Tour soporifique. D'ailleurs, les commentateurs TV (voulant préserver l'audimat) comptaient plus sur Froome que sur Nibali pour renverser Wiggins, c'est dire le niveau de Nibali sur ce Tour.

Si Nibali gagne ce Giro c'est qu'aucun des ces 2-là n'est au départ (Wiggins n'était clairement pas à son niveau de l'an dernier et en plus il a eu quelques pépins). Le Giro de l'an dernier n'était pas fameux non plus (l'étape de l'Alpe di Pampeago a été une déception) mais il y avait un gros suspense concernant le vainqueur final et l'étape du Stelvio a donné plus ce qu'on pouvait en attendre. Cette année, rien de tout ça. Vivement le Tour (de France).
