Today was the 21st stage, the ultimo tappa thus of this Giro d'Italia 2013. A Giro with much less animation than some of those we've seen a few years ago but a Giro which was mostly impacted by the weather.
The last stage was, as often in a Grand Tour, without much interest, except of course to know the name of the winner of the last bunch sprint in the streets of Brescia and it was, not really surprisingly, the man whose nickname (well, at least in Italy) is the fastest man in the world, Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).

A modified stage which, thanks to its non modified final part with a mountain top finish gave a beautiful finish today in the Giro d'Italia 2013. The summary of the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013: Silandro > Tre Cime di Lavaredo
With the abandon of Robert Gesink (Blanco Pro Cycling Team) during the improvised rest day yesterday (following the cancellation of the 19th stage) and the suspension of Danilo di Luca (Vini Fantini-Selle Italia) following a positive test for EPO a few days before the start of the Giro, 169 riders came to the start of this forelast stage of the Tour of Italy 2013 in Silandro.
After the the initial announcement of a modification of the 19th stage which was finally followed by a complete cancellation of yesterday's stage because the snow on top of the lower mountains on the modified race route was still too important to let the stage go off, the forelast stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013 today will also follow a modified race route.

The start ramp of this mountain time trial was located in the velodrome of Mori for a climb split into two parts: 6% over the first part, a short slightly descending split and a second part going up at 7 to 8% average.
The 17th stage took place on a completely flat race route, with a short but steep climb in the last 30 kilometers. It's difficult to say anything else about this stage than that it was annoying, until Giovanni Visconti accellerated just at the right moment in this climb, which allowed him to win this stage in a solo win. Solo win which surprises the sprinters who must be disappointed to not have been able to battle for victory in this stage ...

On the day that Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) celebrated his 28th birthday, the stage victory in the Giro d'Italia 2013, at the finish in Ivrea, didn't go to the British rider. Fortunately he had his part of the birthday cake and thus a way to celebrate it before the race even started ...
A stage which took place in the cold up on the main climbs in the Giro d'Italia 2013 which arrives in France today. Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) ended solo, in a completely white landscape with snow flakes falling on him, and maybe he ended solo and won this stage because the finish line was moved down the mountain a bit. The race route thus got 12 kilometers longer but a bit less difficult as well. 4 riders didn't start this afternoon in Cervere: Daniele Bennati and Karsten Kroon for Team Saxo-Tinkoff, Gert Steegmans (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) and Jack Bobridge (Blanco Pro Cycling Team), while the 183 other riders had to start under -not surprisingly in this Giro- the rain.
