The Grand Départ of the 2028 Tour de France in Reims and the Champagne-Grand Est region in detail
Following the Grand Départs in Barcelona in 2026, the United Kingdom in 2027 and before that Italy in 2024, the Spanish Basque Country in 2023, and Denmark in 2022, the Tour de France 2028 will see its Grand Départ take place in France!A return to its roots, then, with this Grand Départ in Reims and, more broadly, the Champagne Grand Est region, according to the official name of this Grand Départ.
So it will be in Reims that the festivities begin and where the riders of the Tour de France 2028 line up at the start of the first stage, but the rest remains rather vague for now because, even though four stages have been announced for this Grand Départ in Champagne Grand-Est, only the start and finish cities have been specified so far, without knowing exactly how they are connected. Reims has often hosted the Tour de France for its opening stages, such as most recently in 2019 for the start of the 4th stage heading toward Nancy, or before that in 2014 for the finish of the 6th stage from Arras. In 1951 and 1956, the first stage of the Tour de France had already started from Reims!
There will furthermore be stages with starts or finishes in:
- Épernay, which most recently hosted the Tour de France in 2019 with the finish of Stage 3 from Binche, Belgium, and served as the start city in 2014 for Stage 7 heading to Nancy
- Charleville-Mézières, which hosted the Tour several times in the late 1960s, before returning as the start of the 3rd stage of the Tour de France in 2003 heading toward St-Dizier, and which also hosted the Critérium International from 2001 to 2009 and is currently still part of the Circuit des Ardennes route
- Metz, where the Tour de France has often stopped, although the most recent visit was in 2012 when the 6th stage arrived there from Épernay
- Thionville, which has so far hosted only one finish of the Tour de France, in 1999 from Avesnes-sur-Helpe for the 7th stage
- Verdun, which hosted the finish of the 4th stage of the Tour de France in 2001, coming from Huy in Belgium, and the start the following day heading toward Bar-le-Duc

And what about the dates for the 2028 Tour de France?
Regarding the dates, the Tour de France 2028 will take place at a slightly different period than usual, due to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2028 in Reims is therefore scheduled for June 24–27, 2028. Consequently, the Tour de France 2028 will take place from Saturday, June 24, 2028, to Sunday, July 16, 2028.
* Note: Unlike usual, Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), the organizer of the Tour de France, has not yet announced further details regarding the stages or the initial route information. As a result, it will not yet be possible to prepare the detailed OpenStreetMap maps that you can explore more easily in the velowire app!
