It's May, the classics season is behind us, so it's already time to turn to the Grand Tours ... and more precisely to Italy for the Giro d'Italia or Tour of Italy. The 2025 edition kicks off this Friday, May 9, in Durrës, Albania, and a total of 3443.3 km are on the program for the 184 riders representing the 23 teams at the start of this Giro d'Italia 2025.

After the Grand Départ from Albania with 3 stages including a time trial, the race has a first rest day before resuming in the south of Italy. It then gradually climbs northwards, where it will first explore the eastern side over 5 stages, before visiting the north-west over 3 stages. This is followed by the now customary but still rather incomprehensible transfer to the city of Rome, where a loop stage will bring this 108th edition of the Giro d'Italia to a close!

In this article you'll find all the details of this route, with OpenStreetMap maps, stage profiles and time- and route schedules. The route of the Giro d'Italia 2025 will no longer hold any secrets for you!

Abandonment of 3 types of sprints to retain only 2

Last year saw the introduction of 3 types of sprints, with points sprints (for the cyclamen jersey points classification), bonus sprints and Intergiro sprints (for the Intergiro classification, which had made a comeback after being discontinued in 2006 and is now coming to a halt once again). This year we'll have two types of sprint:
  • the classic intermediate sprints, which award points for the cyclamen jersey points classification (as at the finish of the road stages)
  • the Red Bull KM Red Bull, sponsored by the eponymous company, which has become the equivalent of the bonus sprint we've known for some years in the Tour de France, once per stage (on the 19 road stages), rather in the final part. As it passes, bonus seconds will be awarded to the first 3 riders: 6, 4 and 2 seconds respectively (at the finish it's 10 seconds for the winner). The preceding kilometer will be decorated in the sponsor's colors, but it's the crossing of the sprint line that counts, not what happens during that kilometer.

The Grand Depart of the 2025 Giro d'Italia in Albania 🇦🇱

For the first time in its history, the Giro d'Italia will start in Albania 🇦🇱, for this 15th Grand Depart abroad. 3 stages will take place in Albania, starting with a road stage between Durrës - the country's second-largest city and main port - and the capital, Tiranë. The second stage will be an individual time-trial in the streets of the capital, while the 3rd and final stage of the Grand Départ takes place in a loop around the seaside resort of Vlorë.

1/ Friday 9 May 2025 - Durrës (Durazzo) 🇦🇱 > Tiranë (Tirana) 🇦🇱 - 160 km

This first stage of the Giro d'Italia will start from the port of Durrës and head south via Kavajë and Progozhinë before heading east to Elbasan, where the second intermediate sprint will take place, relatively soon after the first in Papër. From Elbasan, the riders then head north towards the country's capital, via a 2nd category difficulty, Gracen. Close to the finish, but before arriving on the final circuit, they will compete in the Red Bull KM in Sauk. They will then cross the finish line once (in the opposite direction) before heading for a final circuit to the east of the finish town, which contains a 3rd category difficulty at Surrel. After completing this first lap of the circuit, they will turn shortly after the finish line to cross it again in the opposite direction and complete a second lap of the circuit and thus the ascent of this difficulty. When they return to Tiranë, it will be for good, and the first wearer of the overall leader's pink jersey will be determined.

2/ Saturday 10 May 2025 - Tiranë (Tirana) 🇦🇱 > Tiranë (Tirana) 🇦🇱 - individual time trial - 13.7 km

This second stage features an individual time trial in the streets of Tiranë. The course is almost entirely flat, but its difficulty lies more in the technical side, as it contains numerous bends, several of them 360°. There is one tiny bump in the course, where the intermediate timing point has been placed, while the finish in Tiranë, this time solo, is in exactly the same place as the day before.

3/ Sunday 11 May 2025 - Vlorë (Valona) 🇦🇱 > Vlorë (Valona) 🇦🇱 - 160 km

After a first transfer, the Giro d'Italia is a master in this field, the riders will find themselves at the start of the 3rd stage of this Giro d'Italia 2025 in Vlorë, still in Albania, and this stage will take place in a loop to have a finish a few hundred meters north of the start (surprising, if you do a loop stage, you usually put the start and finish in the same place). The riders begin this stage by heading a short way north, before making two quick right-hand turns and finding themselves on the southern descending part of the stage. They then pass through the Gjorm sprint and the q. Shakellës (4th category) climb before arriving at the southernmost point of this stage, near Qeparo on the seafront. From here they climb back up towards the finish, following the seafront. Very soon, and this time exceptionally far from the finish, they find the Red Bull KM in Himarë, followed by the sprint in Gjilekë and the serious climb to Qafa e Logarasë (2nd category). Passing through Orikum, they then continue their way up north to the finish in Vlorë, which is a little further north of the start line, which they cross just before ... let's hope no rider is fooled into thinking the finish is at the start!

R1/ Monday 12 May 2025 - rest in Lecce

After the 3 days of racing in Albania, the Giro d'Italia 2025 peloton moves to the southern part of Italy and rests in Lecce (not a very big transfer, but as it's done by boat, an extra rest day has been planned, hence the start of the race on a Friday). Surprisingly, the rest day will be in Lecce, as this is the finish of stage 4, and to get to the start will require a 115 km transfer.

4/ Tuesday 13 May 2025 - Alberobello (Pietramadre) > Lecce - 189 km

Stage 4 will be the first stage of the Giro d'Italia 2025 to take place in Italy. The stage will start at the foot of the boot in Alberobello (Pietramadre), a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its trulli, dry-stone houses with cone-shaped roofs covered in limestone loam.

After setting off from this very special backdrop, the Giro d'Italia 2025 peloton briefly heads west, but after passing through Noci, it's only after around ten kilometers that the riders turn right and climb towards Putignano (4th category), then pass through Castellana Grotte, arrive at the seaside town of Polignano a Mare, where there's an intermediate sprint, before following the seafront through Fasano and on to Ostuni, where the Red Bull KM will be held.

They then head back inland via Ceglie Messapica and Francavilla Fontana, before heading for the foot of the boot via Torre Santa Susanna and the intermediate sprint at San Pancrazio Salentino, where there are some 50 km left to the finish in Lecce, almost 25 of them on a final circuit where they cross the finish line once, before doing the circuit a second time before finally heading for the finish of this stage.

5/ Wednesday 14 May 2025 - Ceglie Messapica > Matera - 151 km

They'll have already passed through here the day before, but this time it's the starting point for this 5th stage: Ceglie Messapica, and this time they'll begin their move away from the foot of the boot. First to Martina Franco, where they turn west to the sprints of Massafra and, a little further on, Marina di Ginosa. From there, they move away from the Gulf of Taranto via the Red Bull KM in Bernalda, and a little further up the climb to Montescaglioso (4th category). They then head for Matera, where they reach the finish line to the north after circling the town to the west.

6/ Thursday 15 May 2025 - Potenza > Napoli - 227 km

At 227 kilometers from Potenza, this 6th stage will be the longest of the Giro d'Italia 2025, heading northwest. The road soon rises, but this first difficulty does not count towards the best climber classification. After the descent, and with the next climb already underway, the riders arrive at the first intermediate sprint, at Muro Lucano, and then continue their climb towards the foot of the first referenced difficulty of this stage, that of Valico di Monte Carruozzo (2nd category, 19.9 km at 3.8% with a maximum of 11%).

After skirting the Lago di Conza, they contest the intermediate sprint at Lioni, pass through Cassino Irpino, Atripalda and Avellino before arriving at another difficulty, that of Monteforte Irpino (3rd category). They then continue on the same line, passing through Nola, and contest the Red Bull KM in Brusciano, before taking a rather surprising, almost flat detour north of the finish city, before heading right for the finish line at Napoli.

7/ Friday 16 May 2025 - Castel di Sangro > Tagliacozzo - 168 km

Stage 7 won't be easy, and the climb to Roccaraso (3rd category) begins right at the start in Castel di Sangro. After passing over a plateau, a long descent follows, in which the riders will compete for the Sulmona sprint, and when they finally reach the bottom, a new climb awaits them a few kilometers further on, that of Monte Urano (2nd category, 4.5 km at 9.4% with a maximum of 14%). Here again, after the descent, the next climb already begins, even if it's not at the top of this one that points will be awarded for the best climber classification. After a short dip, the riders climb again, reaching the summit of Vado della Forcella (21.6 km at 3.6% with a maximum of 9%). Then there's the staircase descent before the Red Bull KM at the foot of the final climb in Tagliacozzo. Then there's an 11.9 km 1st category climb at 5.5% (with a maximum of 14%) to reach Marsia above Tagliacozzo.

8/ Saturday 17 May 2025 - Giulianova > Castelraimondo - 197 km

Stage 8 of the Giro d'Italia 2025 will be a rather long stage, and starting at the seaside in Giulianova, the road is bound to rise (the only way is up!), and this is clearly the case in this stage, if only because of the serious 1st category difficulty at the halfway point.

First the riders will find the intermediate sprint at Roccafluvione, and then they will be almost at the foot of the first difficulty of the day, that of Croce di Casale (3rd category), and the same will be true of the intermediate sprint at Sarnano. This time, however, the riders find themselves at the foot of a first-category difficulty, with a 13.1-km climb at 7.4% (with a maximum of 14%) ahead of them, the Sassotetto climb. With this climb, their troubles are still not over, as they continue fairly quickly on to the Montelago climb (3rd category), and as they approach the finishing town they find the Red Bull KM at Castel Santa Maria. They will then be 19.6 kilometers from the finish line, as the stage turns around to the north, to pick up one last difficulty, the 4th category Gagliole climb. 6.5 kilometers further on, they will cross the finish line at Castelraimondo (probably not all in a bunch, and therefore not at all in a bunch sprint).

9/ Sunday 18 May 2025 - Gubbio > Siena - 181 km

Stage 9 will start in Gubbio, and will be marked by a sort of wall to climb after just under 50 km, and by the white roads usually found on the Strade Bianche route. 5 white roads await the riders, before the finish, which is also identical to that of the Strade Bianche. First, after just under 50 km, the riders will contest the intermediate sprint at Mercatale, and will then reach the foot of the 3rd category La Cima climb. Some 30 km after the descent of this climb, they reach another intermediate sprint, that of Sinalunga, and continue on to San Giovanni d'Asso, where they arrive in the white roads zone. Following part of the Strade Bianche return route, they pass over no less than 5 white roads, covering a distance of no less than 29.6 kilometers. The 3rd of these is uphill, to San Martino in Grania (4th category). And as with the Strade Bianche, the finish will be in Siena, on the famous Piazza del Campo.

R2/ Monday 19 May 2025 - repos à Pisa

After all these stages, the riders will be able to rest again, this time in Pisa.

10/ Tuesday 20 May 2025 - Lucca > Pisa - individual time trial - 28,6 km

Stage 10, the day after the second rest day, will be the second and last time trial of the Giro d'Italia 2025. The 28.6-kilometer stage runs from Lucca to Pisa. After almost entirely following the wall surrounding the city, each rider heads south on a road with many bends, up to the first intermediate timing point at Pontetetto (8.3 km). Then follows a virtually straight line, over the small bump in the course, to the hairpin bends at San Giuliano Terme and on to the second intermediate timing point at Asciano. They then follow a straight line to the finishing town, before entering the city center and crossing the line after passing the famous leaning tower and the cathedral with its adjoining dome.

11/ Wednesday 21 May 2025 - Viareggio > Castelnovo ne' Monti - 186 km

Stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia 2025 will start in Viareggio on the seafront and, despite the fact that it heads directly inland, the first 80km of the stage will have only a slight positive incline, passing through the sprint at Borgo a Mozzano. Then comes a behemoth, Alpe San Pellegrino, a 1st category pass (13.7km at 8.8% with a maximum at 19%). After a long descent, there's a second intermediate sprint at Cerredolo, and as they cross the line of this sprint, they find themselves at the bottom of a 2nd category climb, towards Toano (11.1 km at 4.9% with a maximum of 10%) and the next difficulty will host the Red Bull kilometer at Villa Minozzo, and a little further on they find yet another 2nd category difficulty just before the finish line, towards Pietra di Bismantova. Arriving in Castelnovo ne' Monti, the riders then pass through the town center before heading up towards the northern part of the town once they've reached the west, to head towards the finish line from the north.

12/ Thursday 22 May 2025 - Modena > Viadana (Oglio-Po) - 172 km

Starting from Modena, stage 12 will be much easier than its predecessor. Around 35 km of the stage is largely flat, passing through Maranello, Sassuolo and Castellarano, before the riders arrive on slightly rougher terrain, starting with the climb to Baiso (3rd category), then passing through Carpineti, Felina, Casina, San Polo d'Enza, Quatro Castella and Montecchio Emilia, before arriving at the Sant'Ilario d'Enza intermediate sprint. Passing around Parma, they then head for the Red Bull KM in Brescello, just before arriving on the stage's final circuit. After crossing the finish line almost as soon as they arrived on the circuit, the latter extends the stage by a further 26.6 km, entirely on the flat.

13/ Friday 23 May 2025 - Rovigo > Vicenza - 180 km

From the start in Rovigo, this 13th stage heads north in an almost straight line, over flat terrain, and after around 30 km arrives at the foot of a difficult climb, the Passo Roverello (4th category). After the descent, they head west, again over flat terrain, passing through the two intermediate sprints at Noventa Vicentina and San Bonifacio. By this time, they are already on part of the route heading east, and some 20 km further on, the terrain becomes a little rougher again, with a first small bump and then the climb to San Giovanni in Monte (4th category), before they head for the final circuit, which they reach at Santa Croce Bigolina.

Here, they first climb to the finish line at the Santuario Monte Berico in Vicenza (4th category, 750 m at 10%), before passing through Sant'Agostino and Arcugnano, where the Red Bull KM will be located at the top of a small bump of 2.5 km at 5%, then Torri, Tormeno and Santa Croce Bigolina, where they will be back at the starting point of the circuit. On the way to the finish in Vicenza, they will of course climb the 4th category difficulty again.

14/ Saturday 24 May 2025 - Treviso > Nova Gorica/Gorizia - 195 km

On the first day of the 3rd weekend, stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia 2025 is largely flat, but it's in the final stretch that two difficulties create 3 obstacles in the riders' path. From Treviso, the stage heads west towards the border with Slovenia. Before reaching the border, the riders will encounter the intermediate sprints of Morsano al Tagliamento and Talmassons, and the Red Bull KM at Manzano. The race then crosses the border into Slovenia, first to climb the ascent to Goniace San Martino (4th category). They then cross the border back into Italy to head for the final circuit, which explores the Italian and Slovenian sides of the border town of Nova Gorica (Italian side) / Gorizia (Slovenian side). It's on the Slovenian side that they'll climb a small wall in Saver, which they climb before crossing the finish line, so they climb it again on the second passage, before heading for the finish line on the Italian side.

15/ Sunday 25 May 2025 - Fiume Veneto > Asiago - 219 km

On Sunday, a completely different stage awaits the riders from Fiume Veneto. Initially, the route has a fairly gentle gradient, passing through the sprint at San Martino Colle Umberto, the little but steep hill also known from the Veneto Classic, the Muro di Ca' del Poggio (4th category) and the intermediate sprint at Possagno. And that's where their troubles begin, as they'll find themselves almost at the foot of Monte Grappa (1st category, 25.1 km at 5.7% with a maximum of 11%) and, after its descent, the climb to Dori (2nd category, 16.4 km at 5.4%). On this climb, they will be competing for the Red Bull KM at Enego. The rest of the route remains a little hilly, right up to the finish in Asiago.

R3/ Monday 26 May 2025 - rest day in Piazzola sul Brenta

The 3rd rest day finally arrives, and the riders will be able to rest in Piazzola sul Brenta, the starting town for the following day.

16/ Tuesday 27 May 2025 - Piazzola sul Brenta > San Valentino (Brentonico) - 203 km

The last week of the Giro d'Italia 2025 will be everything but easy, and that'll start right from this 16th stage. Indeed, after the start in Piazzola sul Brenta, the route already goes up while the riders go towards the intermediate in Piovene Rocchette. They get out of the urban zone and a bit further they'll start a real climb, up to the first mountain top of this stage, in Carbonare (2nd category, 12.9 km at 4.6% with a maximum of 10%), and its descente almost immediately goes on to a climb of the first category, towards Candriai (10.1 km at 7.6% with a maximum of 13%).

They then go off south and in a short bump which follows, they battle for the intermediate sprint in Cavedine before they get on another serious 1st category climb, the climb of Santa Barbara (12.7 km at 8.3% and a maximum of 14%). Right when they get to the bottom of it, they immediately go on with the final climb, which takes place in steps, the first step ending in the Red Bull KM in Brentonico, followed by a second one and after a short downhill part finally the last step which brings them to the finish at the Passo di San Valentino (1st category, 18.2 km at 6.1% and a maximum of 14%).

17/ Wednesday 28 May 2025 - San Michele all'Adige (Fondazione Edmund Mach) > Bormio - 155 km

The 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2025 also contains several difficulties, but there are "only" 3 for this stage and there's only one 1st category climb. However, there'll be almost no flat kilometer during this stage.

At the start in San Michele all'Adige, north of Trento, the riders first go off north on a light climbing race route towards the intermediate sprint in Cles before they turn left and continue the light climb towards the foot of the Passo del Tonale (2nd category, 15.2 km at 6% and a maximum of 9%). At the foot of this climb, they'll battle for the intermediate sprint of Vezza d'Oglio and the route again goes down then, until the foot of the next climb, the famous Passo del Mortirolo (1st category, 12.6 km at 7.6% and a maximum of 16%).

After the descent of this mountain, the route again goes up, via the Red Bull KM in Le Prese. It'll continue this way until the next difficulty which they go find by turning around the finish city on the west side. This'll be a 3rd category climb towards Le Motte and after the top of this climb, they descend (both going north as riding on a downwards going road) towards the finish in Bormio.

NEW: velowire prepares its mobile app!

In the velowire mobile app you'll find all the publications, the UCI cycling calendar with information on all the races, their stages and results, photos and videos, as well as a section dedicated to cycling race maps. The latter will be exclusive to the mobile app, and you'll also have the option of being geolocated on the map, so you'll know exactly where you are in relation to the race! What's more - and this was also the case for the stages of the Giro d'Italia 2025 - the maps will often be available a little faster in the app in the "Maps" section than on the site. All stages have been published in the app as they were produced, while this article has been updated in packets of additional stage. So don't hesitate to download the velowire app directly from the Play Store on Android, or find the detailed presentation of the velowire app for more information ... and to find out when the iOS version will become available !

ATTENTION: the app is still undergoing testing and has not yet been officially released. There are some known limitations, which will be corrected shortly.

  6. Bonjour,
