Tomorrow the 64th Vuelta a España will start in Assen in The Netherlands. The riders start with a 4,5 km prologue on the motor circuit TT Assen and with 3 stages in The Netherlands and Belgium (click here to see the full route of the Vuelta 2009).
Tonight the different teams have been presented: 198 riders will be at the start for 22 different teams. In this article you can discover who are those riders, which numbers they have and what their ambitions are for this Tour of Spain 2009 !
The first rider will start at 3.30PM while the last rider will leave the start ramp at 6.38PM.
Since last year's winner, Alberto Contador, won't participate this year, Samuel Sanchez got the number 1 since he's the Olympic champion.

The Spanish team appointed the Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez as its leader: he would like to finish on the podium. In the Vuelta 2007 he finished third and he has a total of 5 stage wins in the Vuelta; this year he hopes to do even better.

AG2R La Mondiale (France) : Top 5 as a goal!
The French team is lead by the Slovenian rider Tadej Valjavec and fixed some pretty high goals.Vincent Lavenu, the team's manager said: Our most important goal is to get a good place in the GC for our leader. I think about a place among the first 10 or even in the Top 5. Furthermore we will try to get some stage wins which we really need this season. The team gets good results in the Grand Tours but we're lacking stage wins. John Gadret, Rinaldo Nocentini and Sébastien Hinault should be able to win a stage. Hinault already won one stage in 2008 in the Vuelta. Jose-Luis Arrieta will as usual keep his role as organisor in the team, making sure that everything's fine and to protect our leader. We will do everything we can to win a stage in this Tour of Spain!
Valjavec seized the occasion to sign a new contract with his team for 2010 with an option for 2011.

Astana (Kazakhstan)
The Kazakh team can unfortunately not count on Andreas Klöden for this Spanish race. The German rider fell in the 2nd stage of the Eneco Tour and has a wrist injury since. However, apparently this decision has already been taken before.The Spanish rider Haimar Zubeldia will lead this team but a rider from Kazakhstan could well become one of its leaders as well: Alexander Vinokourov. This rider who was suspended in July 2007 after a positive test on blood transfusion is back in the peloton since early August. In the Tour de l'Ain he had to participate in the national team of Kazakhstan since he didn't manage to sign a contract with his former team Astana. In the mean time the negociations (which were apparently that difficult that Johan Bruyneel had to spend a few nights in the hospital afterwards) succeeded and Vino is thus back at Astana !
His comeback was quite successful so far: in the Tour de l'Ain he won one stage and he's also become time trial champion at the Asian championships. In the Vuelta he will rather try to get a stage win than a spot on the podium: I didn't expect to win these races, but the level of the Vuelta is much higher. I'm not sure wether I can keep the same condition during three weeks. Therefore I prefer to target a stage win, in a time trial or in the mountains.

The second Dutch team in this Tour of Spain recently contracted the Feillu brothers for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. This team comes to the Vuelta with several riders who can win a stage.The Slovenian sprinter Borut Bozic for example had already won the first stage of the Tour of Poland and more recently won the first stage of the Tour du Limousin.
The riders of this team which is rapidly improving its reputation will start with a mourning band as a mark of honour to the father of one of the riders, Lieuwe Westra, who despite this loss will participate in the Tour of Spain anyway.

This may sound silly, but is there a way for anyone to take part in a large cycling tour individually ? I read various articles and noticed the participants are specially selected Teams so it would mean that no one else can enter the tour..
