Last Thursday, the race route of Paris-Nice 2016, the 74th edition of the race which is nicknamed "The race to the sun", has been officially announced (much earlier than usual). Original and with influences from other races, Paris-Nice will this year be mountaineous and difficult and in order to win the race the riders have to be in shape from start till finish!

The Paris-Nice 2016 race route in detail
Paris-Nice 2016 will be made up of a prologue in the streets of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine of 6.1 km and of 7 stages in line bringing the riders from Condé-sur-Vesgre to the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. In total, 1,290.1 kilometers will be on the programme of the race.A prologue and a stage with dirt roads in the final part
It all starts with a prologue of 6.1 kilometers in the streets of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine and after this solo effort, the riders will stay in the Yvelines department but the start of the first stage will be about sixty kilometers south-west in Condé-sur-Vesgre from where the riders will go off towards Vendôme, partly over the roads of Paris-Tours which usually has its feeding zone in this finish city. In Paris-Nice however, the riders will find two dirt roads in the final part of the stage, and they'll of course remind the riders of the Tro Bro Léon and its famous ribins. The first one will be 1,300 meters long and the second of 600 meters will be at 3.5 kilometers from the finish. This stage will have a total distance of 195 km.
The transition and the Mont Brouilly
The second stage will take place between Contres and Commentry over 214 kilometers and will bring the riders to the center of France. The stage will end with a local circuit around the finish city.
The next day, the punchers will get ready for the third stage, with a 165.5 kilometers long stage starting in Cusset. Indeed, this stage will end on the Mont Brouilly, a 3 kilometers long hill at 7.7% of which the last kilometers show a 9% steepness and this stage will also have a final circuit: the riders will thus have to climb this hill twice before we get to know the winner of this stage. The riders who participated in Paris-Nice in 2014 will recognise this hill because they've already climbed it during the Nevers > Belleville stage.
The Mont Ventoux is approaching!
For the fourth stage, the peloton will start a bit further north, in Juliénas, for a stage of 193.5 kilometers towards Romans-sur-Isère.
The next day, the fifth stage will go back to a city which is well known for the different races organised by A.S.O., with for example a stage start of Paris-Nice in 2009 or a stage start of the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2010, before a visit of the Tour de France in 2011 and in 2012! The city in question of course is Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux and going off to Salon-de-Provence the riders will have to climb the Mont Ventoux (like in the Tour de France 2016). They'll not go up to the top of the climb however because at about 6 kilometers from the finish, at the Chalet Reynard, they'll turn right and the highest point of Paris-Nice 2016 will thus be there, at an altitude of 1,440 meterd. The stage will have a total of 193.5 kilometers and before they climb the Mont Ventoux until the Chalet Reynard, the riders will have already climbed the Col de la Madeleine (1.6 km @ 4.1%) and after the descent towards Sault and Apt, they'll then climb the Col du Pointu (5.9 km @ 4.1%). At about thirty kilometers from the finish, they'll climb the Côte de la Roque d'Anthéron (4.2 km @ 5.5%) and the Col de Sèze (1.7 km @ 7.2%).

The queen stage with the new mountain top finish at Madone d'Utelle and the final stage in the area behind Nice
The queen stage of this Paris-Nice 2016 will be the 6th stage between Nice and the new mountain top finish on the Madone d'Utelle. Right from the start in Nice it will go uphill, with the climb of the Côte de Gattières (4.5 km @ 4.8%) and after a visit of the Vence flat, the climb of the Côte de Coursegoules (11.5 km @ 4.4%) starts in Pont du Loup.
After the descent down to Roquestéron-Grasse, the riders will continue with the climb of the Côte de la Sigale (7.3 km @ 4.9%) and after the descent they'll go on with the Côte de Levens (6.2 km @ 5.6%) and the Côte de Duranus (1.6 km @ 8.4%) before the final climb towards La Madone d'Utelle (15.3 km @ 5.7%) after 177 kilometers in this stage which will thus finish at an altitude of 1,165 mètres and of which the last 300 meters show a 11% steep climb.

The last stage will start and finish in Nice and will offer the riders a big number of climbs following up on each other in the back area of Nice. They'll get back on the Côte de Duranus (3.9 km @ 4.3%) and the Côte de Levens (5.3 km @ 3.1%) before they'll go on with the less well known Côte de Châteauneuf (5.4 km @ 4.4%), Col de Calaison (6.3 km @ 4.4%) and the Côte de Peille (6.6 km @ 6.8%). They'll get on the final circuit around Nice and after the first crossing of the finish line, everything is still open in this stage because it's quite probable that the Col d'Eze (7.7 km @ 5.7%), often climbed in a time trial in Paris-Nice, will be decisive in this stage! This stage will be 141 kilometers long.

Un beau parcours qui fait concurrence à Tirreno et qui peut attirer de belles têtes d'affiches qui désertaient souvent Paris - Nice ces dernières années.
Résumons ce parcours : audacieux et commercial !
Retour d'un prologue ok. Je préfère presque car au moins la course commence dés le départ et non vers la 3-4ème.
Voici l'originalité ! Je ne connaissais pas ces secteurs. Surement une personne de la mairie cyclosportif qui a dû proposer ça … Mais surtout ASO doit être demandeur ! Le retour des pavés en force, le ChFr à Lannilis (+les rumeurs du Tour là bas) : ASO veut chercher d'autres sentiers non battus. L'intérêt est aussi au niveau du programme de course.
La plupart du temps, quand un coureur faisait les Strade puis Milan-San Remo il faisait entre les deux Tirreno. Ici on propose une réplique des Strade (pas le même charisme) ce qui pourrait attirer certains coureurs encore réticent à ce genre de ''classique''. Je dis donc bien vu que ce soit sportivement voire commercialement.
Lendemain : l'étape des vents mais je risque par contre de mettre en vent au Mont-Brouilly. Je ne
sais pas qui finance cette arrivée mais de un, je ne suis pas favorable à cette double montée (3ème boucle finale en trois jours), et de deux je ne vois pas l'intérêt de ne pas pousser jusqu'à Belleville. On avait été déçu du peloton sur la fin en 2014 mais le final était tout de même à Suspence. Dommage de résumer cette côte à un ''Mur'' type Vuelta.
J'attends le profil de Romans (candidat au Tour ?).
Le Ventoux ! Tous les médias reprennent ce terme plus que celui du Chalet Reynard.
Je dis pourquoi pas à cette étape assez bien travaillé il me semble sur la fin. Espérons à scénario équivalent à Villard-de-Lans. Cependant, je n'aurais pas hésité à montée le Mont-Ventoux réellement. Par Malaucène bien-sûr ! Si on veut une course qui part de loin autant prendre cette option et gardé la montée par Bédoin en cas de forte chute de neige (si seulement …).
La seul vrai étape de montagne. Je n'aurais pas cru à cette montée mais ASO cherche d'autre chose après Lure et Chambouret. C'est bien ! Cela aurait pu être mieux précédé mais je pense que cela suffit largement.
Sur Le Grupetto, Svam a critiqué cette dernière étape et son final. Il me semble effectivement plus propice de raccourcir l'avant dernière descente et proposer le col d'Eze sur une distance plus courte mais plus pentu. J'aurais aussi raccourcis l'étape.
En conclusion. Un bon parcours largement supporté par cette première étape. Sinon rien de neuf à part quelques nouveautés et un ''Ventoux'' loin de l'arrivée comme souvent souhaité (trop loin ?). Mais pour Paris – Nice ont en demande pas plus !
Je suis assez dubitatif sur ce parcours.
Les 1ere partie jusqu'à Romans est classique, des étapes de plaine et une arrivée pour puncheurs-grimpeurs avec du pourcentage, reste à voir ce que va donner le final vers .
Concernant l'étape de Vendôme, ça risque d'être une journée très stressante pour les coureurs si le vent s'en mêle et s'il n'est pas présent, l'approche du 1er chemin va être hyper dangereuse, tout le monde va vouloir être dans les 15-20 premiers, les sprinteurs et leurs trains ainsi que les coureurs qui visent le général et leurs escortes, ça me fait déjà froid dans le dos.
Pour ce qui est des 3 derniers jours de courses, je n'aime pas vraiment ce qui est proposé.
J'ai du mal à imaginer autre chose qu'une échappée de baroudeur (loin au GC) se disputer la victoire à Salon sans qu'il y ait d'action entre les cadors et même chose pour la boucle niçoise, le dernier col étant vraiment isolé et trop peu sélectif.
Rien à redire sur l'étape de la Madone d'Utelle.

Je reviens sur le parcours de la 3e étape entre Cusset et Brouilly.
En effet, pour avoir vu le parcours précis, dire que cette étape se résume à un mur est inexact.
Il y a quand même 5 côtes de 3e catégorie qui se succèdent dans la 2e moitié de l'étape, en plus des 2 ascensions du Mont Brouilly.
A signaler que la 1ere moitié de l'étape emprunte les routes de l'étape St Pourçain-Lyon du Tour 2013. Attention au vent du nord sur cette partie exposée.
