In the 3rd stage of the Tour Down Under 2014 today, Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) did a double good operation, attacking on the steepest climb of this stage, Corkscrew Road, which name is based on the numerous turns. First accompanied by Richie Porte (Team Sky), the Australian rider finally arrived alone on the finish kine and took the leader's jersey of the general classification at the same time.

The summary of the 3rd stage of the Tour Down Under 2014: Norwood > Campbelltown

Immediately after the start, Travis Meyer was the first to attack and the Australian rider rapidly got company from Jérôme Cousin (Team Europcar) and Andriy Grivko (Astana) and a bit later from the veteran of the race, Jens Voigt (Trek Factory Racing). The gap was already above 2 minutes and after 14 kilometers in the race it reached its highest value at 2'40" before it stabilised around 2'20".

At about sixty kilometers from the finish, the gap dropped below 2 minutes for the first time and a bit further Jérôme Cousin decided to abandon his efforts at the head of the race and sat up. But that was only a temporary effect for the gap since it stabilised again around 2'20"/2'10" thanks to the efforts of Jens Voigt.

Despite the continued efforts of the German rider the peloton seriously started to get closer from about thirty kilometers of the finish and took back the leading trio (which was reduced to a duo since Travis Meyer sat up just before) at 16 kilometers from the finish.

The complete peloton thus started the climb of Corkscrew Road with Steve Morabito and Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) and Geraint Thomas and Richie Porte (Team Sky) in the lead. When the climb really got harder, Cadel Evans attacked, taking with him his compatriote Richie Porte. The last mentioned couldn't follow the explosive effort of Cadel Evans however and Evans thus went off solo. The leader of the general classification, Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEDGE) then joined Porte but on the top of the climb, Cadel Evans already had a 15 seconds lead on this duo chasing behind him.

In the descent he temporarily got even further away but he finally crossed the finish line 15 seconds ahead of a small group made up of 12 riders among which Nathan Haas (Garmin-Sharp) was the first to cross the line. Other small groups followed at 43 seconds, 1'00", 1'34" and more ... At the same time, Cadel Evans takes the leader's jersey of the general classification, in which he's now 12 seconds ahead of the former leader Simon Gerrans and 15 seconds of yesterday's stage winner Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida). Nathan Haas is 4th at 27 seconds and Robert Gesink (Belkin Pro Cycling Team) and Geraint Thomas 5th and 6th at 29 seconds.
