On 19 October you could already read here that chances were high that the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2015 would be in Utrecht. Once the last details were discussed during a phone call yesterday night, the city of Utrecht and Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) today officially announced that the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2015 will be the 6th Grand Départ of the Grande Boucle in The Netherlands, this time in the city of Utrecht!

In this article you'll discover the first details, knowing that there's not much information officially available yet ...

The Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2015 in Utrecht

After Amsterdam in 1954, the very first Grand Départ of the biggest cycling French race abroad, Scheveningen in 1973, Leiden in 1978, s'Hertogenbosch (or Den Bosch) in 1996 and finally Rotterdam in 2010, this time it's Utrecht's turn to receive the cycling circus which is called Tour de France.

As we mentioned on 19 October, Utrecht had big competition from Rotterdam in 2010 and that city was finally chosen especially because of the planned race route which included a stage towards Brussels and via Zealand which would have been too long if it started in Utrecht. Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour de France, suggested to Aleid Wolfsen, the mayor of Utrecht, and his organising committee to not give up but to continue to work on their candidature in order to try to get a future Grand Départ. Even though the initial candidature goes several years back already, the city of Utrecht should be happy anyway to have managed to get another Grand Départ from a city in The Netherlands so quickly, 5 years only after the one in Rotterdam!

The good relationship between the teams of the city of Utrecht and those of ASO, going up to Christian Prudhomme and Aleid Wolfsen who became friends (but we shouldn't forget the people responsible for the relationships with local authorities with ASO and the people responsible for the development board in Utrecht, thoe responsible for events and the representatives of several local companies) have largely helped Utrecht to be chosen for this Grand Départ.

This morning during a press conference the mayor of Utrecht, Aleid Wolfsen, confirmed the venue of the Tour de France 2015 with a typical Dutch cycling expression: Het is koers! (the race is on; a Dutch multi-author blog carries the name HetIsKoers.nl by the way but strangely there's no mention of the venue of the Tour on there at the time of writing of this article).

Wolfsen also explained that the last details had been discussed during a phone call with Christian Prudhomme and that Prudhomme told him he was as happy as they were and ended the phone call with a dank je wel or "thank you" in Dutch!

In the press release of the host city we of course find the usual presentation of the fact that all eyes will turn to the "cycling city" Utrecht in 2015 and that the images of the historical city centre, the "Dom", Utrecht Science Park and Leidsche Rijn will be broadcasted all around the world.

In the press release the city thanked all the people who contributed to the candidature and who continued to believe in it, and especially the Tour sous le Dom organisation run by Jeroen Wielaert, Dutch journalist and radio presenter who's been very active in this candidature, and in comments on velowire.com! :) Jeroen told me this morning he was very happy that the day finally came that the venue of the Tour de France 2015 has been confirmed!

Christian Prudhomme insisted on the passion, the enthusiasm and the fighting spirit of Utrecht, reminding that The Netherlands is the cycling country. He added that Utrecht's candidature was drawn around the youth in an active city which already has established the link between daily cycling (...) and cycling as a sport, cycling with the champions of the Tour de France which he descibed as the most important challenge for the Tour de France in the 21st century and that The Netherlands are an example in this challenge (indeed, if you only look to the Parisian area, you can clearly see that France can learn a lot from The Netherlands!).

Let's have a look at what the mayor of Utrecht and the director of the Tour de France said in the following item of the Dutch TV:

The race route of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2015 in and around Utrecht

Officially there's no information available yet about the race route as it has been decided for this Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2015 but as I indicated in a comment this morning, chances are high that the Tour will again start with a prologue (after 2 years without it), in the city of Utrecht, followed by a stage start for a stage in line from the same city the next day.

And that's what the mayor of Utrecht confirmed tonight on the local TV, RTV Utrecht, when he described the programme of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2015 which is pretty much as usual:
> on Wednesday everyone from the Tour is in Utrecht (sorry mister Wolfsen but many people will only arrive on Thursday!)
> Thursday teams presentation
> Friday no particular activity
> Saturday a time trial on a long race route in the city, which allows to show the city (so it might not be a prologue but a time trial over 8 kilometres which will thus be qualified as the first stage)
> Sunday 10 to 12 kilometres fictive start in the city, followed by a trip in and around the city, including a visit of the Domtoren and Leidsche Rijn (a new urban area at the west side of Utrecht)

Let's have a look at how the mayor described this in the video below:

The second stage will most logically go towards the south of The Netherlands but so far we don't know whether it will finish in the province of Noord-Brabant (Tilburg or more probably Breda, a city which has organised several cycling events before), in Limburg (Valkenbourg, Maastricht? but that might be a bit far away) or Zealand (where the stage towards Brussels passed in 2010).

These details will be announced on Thursday 28 November during a press conference, first at the Embassy of The Netherlands in the 7th arrondissement in Paris and, after a trip by train, in Utrecht, in the Winkel van Sinkel, a former shop which has now become a cultural center in this 4th biggest city of The Netherlands (in number of inhabitants) and which is also the capital of the province with the same name.

As usual, velowire.com will -where possible- provide you with any information which might be rumoured before that!

(it is most probable that the west of France will be visited in 2015, Brittany -a real cycling country- hasn't really been visited since 2011 for example, 2013's visit having been pretty light)

  6. Leuk, vertrek in Utrecht.
