    Paris-Roubaix 2012: its race route, its cobble zones and other details about the Hell of the NorthAfter Tom Boonen's victory in the Tour of Flandres last Sunday, next Sunday we'll see in the Hell of the North if Tommeke can realise, just like in 2005, a double victory in these two Sunday races .. which would make his 4th win in 2 weeks!

    In this article you'll find the race route of Paris-Roubaix 2012 on Google Maps and in Google Earth as well as all details about the 27 cobbled stones sections which are, just like last year, part of the 110th edition of Paris-Roubaix.

    The race route will be exactly the same as the one used in the 2011 edition, won by Johan Vansummeren (at that time riding for Garmin-Cervélo, currently still in the same team which now has been renamed in Garmin-Barracuda), with still the same 27 cobbled stones sections and 257.5 kilometers between Compiègne and Roubaix. With Fabian Cancellara (Radioshack-Nissan)'s crash on Sunday in the Tour of Flanders, one of the biggest favorites disappears from the Paris-Roubaix list as well. Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) thus now is the biggest favorite but in the Hell of the North, very small things can come alter the race in the Hell of the North, either negatively for one rider or positively for another one. Nothing's thus sure yet, we'll see the battle between the riders on the cobble stones this Sunday ...

    Talking of cobble stones, let's have a look at the 27 zones which will be part of Paris-Roubaix 2012, with the appreciation given by Christian Prudhomme and Jean-François Pescheux after the final reconnaissance which took place this Monday. Here they arre:

    ASO indicates that the appreciation is based on the length, the irregularity of the cobble stones, the general state of the zone and it's place in the race.

    Despite the renovation works (the students of the horticultural schools in Raismes, Flandres and Douai have worked to renovate certain portions in Viesly (after 104 km), Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes (after 142 km) and Millonfosse (after 178.5 km), the Conseil Général du Nord have commissioned a clean-up of the Trouée d'Arenberg and the Pays de Pévèle local authorities have taken the necessary steps to reverse the degradation of the Mons-en-Pévèle section, where the instability of the cobbles could have been a threat to the riders' safety), these parameters apparently haven't changed a lot since the appreciation for the different sections, except for zone #11 (Auchy-lez-Orchies > Bersée) which got a little extra plus, are exactly the same as in 2011.

    After the start from Compiègne on the Place du Général de Gaulle, the riders will leave Compiègne via the Rue du Dahomey, the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, the Rue Solférino, the Rue de Clermont and the Rue de Noyon. The real start of the race will be in Clairoix on the D932. The riders will than follow the usual route until Capelle and it's cobble stones section from Capelle to Ruesnes.
    They'll already have passed the feeding zone in Solesmes and will get on a non referenced cobble stones section between Artres and Préseau. That's not surprising because this section has been covered ... The visit of Préseau however allows the organisor to get to two cobble stones sectors which were new in Paris-Roubaix last year: the one from Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes to Famars (2,600 meters, n° 21) and the one from Famars to Quérénaing (1,200 meters, n° 20).
    They'll get back on the usual race route just after the famous Trouée d'Arenberg. Just like last year, instead of turning close to Wallers, they'll continue straight to get 4.5 kilometers further on the cobble stones sector from Millonfosse to Bousignies.
    The rest of the race route is again the usual Paris-Roubaix race route, with the second feeding zone in Beuvry-la-Forêt and the finish is as usual in the Vélodrome of Roubaix after a complete lap on the track.

    You can use this map to planify your visit of Paris-Roubaix 2012 with all details at hand. No excuses because the organisor of the race doesn't provide enough detailed information! This year, I can furthermore guarantee that the race route on the map is 100% correct. Indeed, I discovered some very minor mistakes in last year's version, but this year I constructed the map based on the GPS data from the Garmin of last year's winner, Johan Vansummeren!

    Don't forget you can use the Streetview function to watch it really closely. Several cobble stones sections have been visited by the Google car and can thus be visited completely, directly in Google Earth! If the car didn't dare to visit a cobble stones section, you can in most cases still see the entrance and the exit of the section ...

    The 25 teams at the start of Paris-Roubaix 2012

    25 teams will come to the start of Paris-Roubaix 2012: first of all, in accordance to its UCI WorldTour status, the 18 UCI ProTeams which are Astana, AG2R La Mondiale, BMC Racing Team, Euskaltel-Euskadi, FDJ BigMat, Garmin-Barracuda, GreenEDGE Cycling Team, Katusha Team, Lampre-ISD, Liquigas-Cannondale, Lotto-Belisol, Movistar Team, Omega Pharma-QuickStep, Rabobank, Radioshack-Nissan, Team Saxo Bank, Team Sky and Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team.

    The 7 other teams which will be present at the start are Team NetApp, the French teams Cofidis, le crédit en ligne, Bretagne-Schuller, Saur-Sojasun and Team Europcar, Farnese Vini-Selle Italia and Team Argos-Shimano (the new name of Project 1t4i since this weekend).

  4. @eric : of het wegdek droog blijft valt nog maar te zien ... voorzover ik gezien heb staat er geen regen op het programma voor komend weekend, maar de weersvoorspellingen lijken op dit moment niet altijd even betrouwbaar ;-). Als Tom zijn kunstje opnieuw laat zien is het denk ik definitief de comeback van de Tom Boonen zoals we die enkele jaren geleden kenden!

    @Jeff: yes, same route ... still difficult and still as exciting I think :-)!

  15. @eric, wij zullen vrijdag avond ter plaatse zijn vermoed ik...heb jij weet als daar plaats is op de weide?of langs de weg? Weet niet wat te verwachten....maar lijkt wel leuk om te doen.Ook eerste maal dat we autonoom staan..bedoel zonder stroomtoevoer..hopelijk halen we zondag.

  16. Allemaal leuk hoor die prognoses, zoals het woord is en niet dat domme nakakelen van Vlaams jargon, maar die zijn op de atletische vermogens en actuele vorm gebaseerd. Een koers kan echter pas met die vermogens bevochten worden als je pechvrij blijft. In Parijs-Roubaix is verwachten dat je mazzel zult hebben zo mogelijk nog dommer dan in elke andere koers. Favorieten, tjeezus! Sinds wanneer hebben recreanten en trim-mongolen verstand v. koers, met hun zadeltasjes, blote benen en foute zit op hun veel te dure race, i.p.v. koersfiets. Er is nog ruimte zat in de mongolenwaaier. Ik heb deze koers bij de amateurs zelf gedaan, en uitgedaan, 38e, wie heeft er nog meer een uitslag in een echte koers i.p.v. een toertocht met patat en bier. Wielrennertje spelen, wat een onbeschrijflijk treurig bestaan. De wielersport heeft nood aan fans met sjoege v. koers i.p.v. op de weg staande naar de camera zwaaiende randdebielen met spijt. Ik kan bijna geen profkoers meer zien met al die lombrosos langs de kant v.d. weg. Zet gvd lekker de tv aan, en blijf aub weg bij koers, we willen u daar niet.

  20. Wij gaan parijs roubaix volgen met de auto zoals de laatste 5 jaar van begin tot einde. Weet er iemand een publieke plaats waar men de laatste km op groot scherm kan kijken? Vorige jaren steeds in een taverne langs parcours maar daar kan je weinig tot niets zien op de TV'tjes

  21. wij hebben ooit (2009) in orchies de doorkomst opgewacht - toen was daar aan de mairie een groot scherm opgesteld , maar hebben al ondervonden dat er elk jaar meer bijkomen... zal ook dit jaar wellicht bekijken en ondervinden worden... vooral niet vergeten te zwaaien naar alle mensen als "@ s. crew" thuis achter de buis...
