Already announced exclusively on this website since the end of December in the article The rumours about the 2011 Paris-Nice route, the official Paris-Nice 2011 race route was finally announced by A.S.O. on February 1st.

At the Conseil Général des Yvelines in Versailles there was no single surprise since the whole list of stage cities was known already.

The particularities of this 69th edition of Paris-Nice are the absence of a prologue (even though both start and finish of the first stage will be in Houdan, this will be a stage in line anyway), an individual time trial at two days from the finish in Nice and a change in the last stage's race route.

A.S.O. also insists on the increased length when mentioning the 1,307 kilometers, but I don't really see that as something really big when you compare it for example to the 1,288 kilometers last year.

The 2011 Paris-Nice race route in detail

When watching the race route as it has been published on the official website, it seems like A.S.O. has done this as a last minute job. Indeed, writing the name of one of the start cities (Rognes) with a small r and publishing nothing more than the stage cities and the number of kilometers for most of the stages seems a bit light to me for a race which starts in about one month. Indeed, only for the stages 5, 6, 7 and 8 there's one additional piece of information: the stage profile ... Even the descriptions of the stages are missing!

A short description of the race route

If I'd had to summarise the Paris-Nice 2011 race route in a few words, I think I'd say that this year's stage route is quite complete and varying and offers opportunities for breakaways in the first days, a potentially decisive element with the individual time trial at two days from the finish (over 27 kilometers) and stages for the climbers on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The climbers will most importantly be happy with the stage from Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise to Vernoux-en-Vivaraix on Thursday 10 March 2011 with the climb of the Col de la Mûre (which has never been climbed before by Paris-Nice) at less than 10 kilometers from the finish!

The stage profiles for the mountain stages and the details of the first stage

1/ Houdan > Houdan - Sunday 6 March 2011 - 154.5 km

This first stage will both start and finish in Houdan. Even though the official website of the race doesn't offer any details on this stage, the website of the Yvelines department presents the two loops which make up this stage:
> a first 81 kilometers long loop via Bazainville, Flexanville, Thoiry, Neauphle-le-Vieux, Maule, Goussonville, Septeuil and Longnes before going back to Houdan:

> a second loop which is 24 kilometers long and which will be done 3 times, cutting off directly from Orgerus towards Gressey before going back to Houdan:

The presentation of the riders will take place from 10AM and the start will be at 11AM. The finish of this first stage is planned for around 2.45PM and the riders will thus come through Houdan 3 times during the stage.

Below you can find the stage profiles of the hilly/mountain stages of Paris-Nice 2011:

5/ Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise > Vernoux-en-Vivarais - Thursday 10 March 2011 - 194 km

This stage between Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise and Vernoux-en-Vivarais is a continuous climbing/descending chain with climbs and mountains like the Côte des Ayats (3), the Col de la Croix de Chaubouret (1), the Côte de Saint-Jeure-d'Ay (3), the Col de Montreynaud (2), the Côte de Vernoux-en-Vivarais (3), the Col de Comberon (3) but most importantly the Col de la Mûre (1) which was never climbed before, at less than 10 kilometers from the finish.

6/ Rognes > Aix-en-Provence - individual time trial - Friday 11 March 2011 - 27 km

According to the information I already published in December, this individual time trial will thus leave Rognes with riders starting each minute from 1.30PM, towards the finish line on the Boulevard de Palerne in Puyricard close to Aix-en-Provence. The last rider should have finished his individual effort by 4.30PM.

7/ Brignoles > Biot - Sophia Antipolis - Saturday 12 March 2011 - 215,5 km

Though the 7th stage starts calmly (with however the Côte des Tuillières (2) and the Côte du Mont Méaulx (3)), the hardest part will be half-way with the climb of the Côte de Cabris (1) which continues in the Col du Ferrier (1). After the climb of the Côte de Gourdon (2), the riders will arrive on a circuit around Biot and will cross the finish line twice before the final finish.

8/ Nice > Nice - Sunday 13 March 2011 - 124 km

The end of the stage repeats the race route from La Turbie (1) to the Col d'Eze (1) before getting back to Nice as usual but the race route after the start will be different from Plan du Var with the Côte de Duranus (3), the Col de Châteauneuf (2) and the Col de Calaïson (2).

    Merci d'avance, Grand Sachem !

    @Sanglier : merci, c'est gentil ! :-)

    @sj : merci pour l'info ! Je vais essayer d'y passer le dimanche !
