The union of Dutch professional cyclists, VVBW (Vereniging Van BeroepsWielrenners), today voted positively for the collective labour agreement (CAO in Dutch) elaborated with the 3 Dutch professional cycling teams, Rabobank Wielerploegen, Skil-Shimano and Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team. This collective labour agreement will allow to define an acceptable choice between the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) rules and the Dutch labour law which were sometimes conflicting.

The negociations were initiated by Rabobank Wielerploegen a few years ago already and the riders did many kilometers on a bike before an acceptable collective labour agreement was established. This is now done with the collective labour agreement recognised by the 3 Dutch cycling teams which has received a positive from a big majority of the VVBW.

Harold Knebel (manager of Rabobank) declared after this vote: There've been differences between the UCI rules and the Dutch labour legislation for a long time now. Thanks to this collective labour agreement, these difference are no longer a problem.

Iwan Spekenbrink (manager of the Skil-Shimano team) is also happy with the clarifications offered by this collective agreement: things like inability to work, the length of contracts, start and end of a contract are now clearly defined. This collective labour agreement contributes to the professionalisation of cycling.
Daan Luijckx (manager of Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team) agrees with this: the collective labour agreement is a good way to create some clarity in the contractual relationship, which also obliged us to think about our contribution to the after-cycling career of professional riders.

John van den Akker (pro rider from 1988 to 1997 and currently manager of several riders), who represented the riders and the VVBW, also showed his satisfaction: finally we agreed upon this, this is an historical moment for Dutch cycling.

The collective labour agreement applies retroactively from the 1st of January 2010 and guarantees for example the salary of a rider who gets disabled until the end of his contract period but also defines a minimum wage for riders.
