Tomorrow, Sunday 26 September 2009, 202 riders will be at the start of the stage in line Elites of the World Championships 2009 in Mendrisio.

In this article you'll find the full list of selections for all participating countries including their numbers.

Those 202 riders will ride 262,2 kilometers on a 13,9 kilometer circuit which they will ride 19 times. You can also discover the route in this article on a Google Maps map, also allowing you to view it in Google Earth and thus make a virtual fly-over!

The route

These World Championships will take place on a 13,8 kilometer circuit with two climbs. By doing this circuit 19 times, the riders will do a total distance of 262,2 with a total height difference of 4.655 meters. This is the biggest height difference of all World Championships ever.
Profile of the route of the road race for the World Championships 2009 in Mendrisio

The first climb starts after 1.9 km: in 1.6 km this climb crosses the city center of Mendrisio over 820 meters before continuing the steep climb Acqua Fresca over 780 meters with an average of over 10%.

Once arrived in Castel San Pietro, the riders will be at the top of this route at 438 meters high. They than start a descent of 4.58 km towards Balerna where they'll be at the lowest point of this route at 250 meters high.

1,420 flat meters will follow before the second climb, the Torrazza di Novazzano which was already on the circuit of the World Championships in Mendrisio in 1971 which were won by Eddy Merckx. In 1.75 km it will climb to a height of 376 meters, sometimes climbing over 10%.

The circuit finishes with a 800 meter descente and a flat part which leads the riders from Genestrerio to Mendrisio in 1.81 km.
