After the opening weekend of the Belgian races (in Flanders), consisting of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, with two victories for Team Visma | Lease a Bike (Jan Tratnik and Wout van Aert respectively), the Walloon season opens this Tuesday with Le Samyn, which also answers to the nickname "La plus flandrienne des wallonnes".

In this article you'll discover the course of Le Samyn 2024 in detail.

The start of Le Samyn 2024, as usual in Quaregnon on the Grand Place, begins with a short loop through the village streets, before heading north. It's after crossing the canal in Ghlin that the riders will be able to launch their first attacks as they cross the canal dock just beyond.

After passing through Baudour, Hautrage and Grandglise, they turn right towards Moulbaix.

This is the start of a first circuit which passes through Ligne and Frasnes-les-Buissenal, before returning to the start of this circuit via Hacquegnies, Thieulain, Leuze-en-Hainaut, Tourpes and Elignies-Sainte-Anne (and this is where the first part of the route ends, drawn in orange on the map, before continuing on the second part, drawn in pink on the map).

After this circuit, they head south again, following the same paths as at the start, but in the opposite direction, to Quaregnon. At the point where the race had joined the N545 on the neutralized route to the actual start, they continue straight on this time, without returning to the fictitious start line, and then continue to the entrance to the final circuit.

This is where things really get interesting, as the circuit contains 5 cobbled sectors, which the riders will have to cover 4 times. Indeed, apart from the very last section, the circuit will have to be covered 4 times, before crossing the finish line in Dour for the 4th time, when victory in this 56th edition of the Samyn will be contested!

Did you know? The name of the Samyn

When it was first held in 1968, the race was called the Grand Prix de Fayt-le-Franc, after the eponymous commune which has since been absorbed by the commune of Honnelles, and which lies on the route of the race's final circuit.

Won by José Samyn in 1968, this rider died during the race in 1969, and the race decided to rename it in tribute to its first winner, hence the name Le Samyn since 1970.
