Since it’s the last week of August, it’s already time for the start of the third Grand Tour of the year, the 2026 Tour of Spain—or, in other words, the Vuelta a España 2026, which will kick off in Monaco for a decidedly international race, taking riders through Monaco, as well as France, Andorra, and, of course, Spain!

Over a total distance of 3,308 km (spread across 21 stages), in which Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates XRG) will be the clear favorite, the riders will compete for the famous red jersey, which will be worn by the race winner during the final stage in Granada.

1/ Saturday, August 22, 2026 - Monaco 🇲🇨 > Monaco 🇲🇨 - individual time trial - 9.4 km

The first stage of the 2026 Vuelta a España will take place in the Principality of Monaco and will be an individual time trial. This time trial will follow a course that is almost entirely flat but highly technical, with numerous turns over a distance of 9.4 kilometers.

2/ Sunday, August 23, 2026 - Monaco 🇲🇨 > Manosque 🇫🇷 - 204 km

The second stage of the 2026 Vuelta a España, the first road stage, starts in Monaco, but it is not until Nice—after 21 kilometers of neutralized racing and the climb up the Col d’Eze—that this stage will truly begin, covering 204 kilometers toward Manosque, France.

Until Villeneuve-Loubet, the riders will follow the coast before heading inland to tackle the Alto Châteauneuf-Grasse climb (3rd category) head-on, then head toward Draguignan and turn toward the Col de Saint Andrieu climb (3rd category). The riders will then continue on their way to the intermediate sprint in Gréoux-les-Bains before turning toward Valensole, running parallel to it, and heading toward the finish in Manosque.

3/ Monday, August 24, 2026 - Gruissan 🇫🇷 > Font Romeu 🇫🇷 - 174 km

The third stage of the 2026 Tour of Spain will continue on French soil, starting from Gruissan. That is where the completely flat section of this stage ends, before climbing—passing through the intermediate sprint in Villefranche-de-Conflent—first toward the Col de Mont-Louis (1st category) and then continue on to the final climb leading to the finish in Font-Romeu (2nd category).

4/ Tuesday, August 25, 2026 - Andorra la Vella 🇦🇩 > Andorra la Vella 🇦🇩 - 104.8 km

Stage 4 of the Vuelta a España 2026 takes riders through the third country on this Tour of Spain: Andorra. It will be a short, loop-style stage, starting and finishing at the same location in Andorra la Vella.

After the start, the riders will first pass through Encamp and Canillo before heading toward Pas de la Casa via the Port d’Envalira climb (1st category). They’ll then turn around, passing through the tunnel to return to Canillo and Encamp. In Encamp, the riders will turn right toward Ordino, where they’ll compete for the intermediate sprint, before beginning the climb up the Coll d’Ordino (Category 1). After the descent, they’ll return to Canillo and turn right to head back through Encamp toward the start. Before reaching it, they’ll turn left to tackle the Alto de la Comella climb (Category 3) and finally head toward the finish line.

5/ Wednesday, August 26, 2026 - Falset > Roquetes - 173.4 km

The fifth stage of the Vuelta a España 2026 will be the first to take place on Spanish soil, and for the remainder of the race, the third Grand Tour will remain entirely within Spain.

This stage will start in Falset and will be much easier than the previous ones, featuring only a third-category climb. From the start, the riders head toward Móra d’Ebre and then continue on toward the coast. They then proceed to Deltebre before turning right toward Amposta and heading back inland. In Tortosa, they pass very close to the finish line but then ride back up along the river, passing through the intermediate sprint in Tivenys; a little further north, the riders cross the river to reach the climb up to Puerto Paüls (3rd category) before continuing the descent along the opposite bank from Xerta to the finish line in Roquetes.

August 6, 2026 (Thursday) – Alcossebre > Castelló – 177.4 km

The sixth stage, starting in Alcossebre, will be a medium-mountain stage, notably due to its double loop in the final section of the stage.

First, the riders head inland west of Torreblanca and climb the Puerto de La Serratella (2nd category), before turning toward Albocàsser and then climbing the Coll de la Bandereta (3rd category). Passing through Benlloc and Vall d’Alba, they will then begin their return to the coast, passing through Cabanes, before following the coast briefly southward. In Benicasim, the riders then turn toward the Desert de las Palmas Natural Park, where they first head toward the Alto del Desierto de las Palmas climb (2nd category) before returning to Benicasim. They then set off again along the same route, but this time push further to tackle the Puerto El Bartolo climb (Category 1). Back at the point where they turned toward Benicasim on the first pass, this time they turn right toward the finish in Castelló.

Friday, August 28, 2026 – Vall d’Alba > Aramón Valdelinares – 149.8 km

Stage 7 of the [[2026 Vuelta a España]] will be a mountain stage, starting in Vall d’Alba. The first 40 kilometers will be relatively easy, but things will get tougher after that.

From Lucena del Cid, the riders will climb the Puerto El Remolcador (2nd category) and then, shortly after, the Alto de Zucaina (3rd category). A few dozen kilometers further on, they will then have to climb the Puerto Fuente de Rubielos (3rd category). A little further on, they’ll reach the intermediate sprint in Mora de Rubielos, followed by a two-part climb, beginning with the Puerto de San Rafael (2nd category). All that remains is the climb to the finish line in Aramón Valdelinares (1st category).

Saturday, August 29, 2026 – Puçol > Xeraco – 171 km

Starting in Puçol, a flat stage awaits the riders of the [[2026 Vuelta a España]].

The stage skirts around Valencia before heading south to contest the sprint in Simat de Valldigna, near the finish line, and then climbs immediately afterward to tackle the day’s only climb, the Puerto de Barx (3rd category). Passing through Gandia, the riders then head briefly north again before battling for the victory in Xeraco.

Sunday, August 30, 2026 – La Villa Joiosa > Alto de Aitana – 187.4 km

Stage 9 will start in La Villa Joiosa, on the coast, and head inland via the Puerto de Tárbena climb (2nd category) before turning south again from Pego via the Puerto de El Miserat (1st category) and the Puerto de Tollos (3rd category). As they approach the finish, the riders will first complete a short loop to the west, passing through the intermediate sprint in Benifallim and the climb up the Puerto de Benifallim (2nd category). Before turning right toward the finish, the riders will reach the summit of the Puerto de Tudons. They will then head east to climb toward the finish at Alto de Attana / Costa Blanca (Category 1).

R1/ Monday, August 31, 2026

After these first 9 stages, the riders will have a chance to rest before tackling the second week.

10/ Tuesday, September 1, 2026 - Alcaraz > Elche de la Sierra - 184.7 km

The 10th stage of the [[2026 Vuelta a España]] will be a hilly stage starting in Alcaraz. Three third-category climbs are on the agenda for this stage: the Puerto del Peralejo, the Puerto de Aýna, and the Puerto de Socovos. The riders will then reach the finish line in Elche de la Sierra on a slight uphill stretch.

11/ Wednesday, September 2, 2026 - Cartagena > Lorca - 151.3 km

Stage 11 of the 2026 Vuelta a España will finally be considered a flat stage, even though 30 kilometers from the finish, the sprinters will need to demonstrate the ability to climb a modest incline—the Alto de Aledo (3rd category, 9.5 km at 4.2%). The stage then ends with a descent and a flat stretch into Lorca.

Thursday, September 3, 2026 - Vera > Calar Alto - 166.6 km

A completely different kind of stage awaits the riders of the [[2026 Vuelta a España]] with this 12th stage starting in Vera. Indeed, after the first two Category 3 climbs (Alto del Cabecico and Alto de Cóbdar) and one Category 2 climb, Collado García, followed by the sprint in Velefique, two Category 1 climbs await the riders at the end of the stage!

In fact, they will then tackle, in the final 45 kilometers, the Alto Velefique (13.1 km at 7.2% / max 15%) and the final climb to Calar Alto (16.9 km at 5.6% / max 18%).

Friday, September 4, 2026 – Almuñécar > Loja – 192.8 km

The thirteenth stage of the [[2026 Vuelta a España]] will start in Almuñécar for a medium-mountain stage of just under 200 kilometers. As they head inland, the riders will tackle the stage’s toughest climb—a Category 1 ascent, the Alto de la Venta de la Cebada—fairly early on. After passing through Padul, they will begin the climb up the Alto del Legionario (Category 2). In the final third of the stage, they’ll reach the intermediate sprint in Tocón and the climb up the Puerto de Granada (2nd category). From there, only a few kilometers remain until the finish in Loja.

September 14, 2026 (Saturday) – Jaén > Sierra de la Pandera – 154.5 km

Stage 14 will be a short but mountainous stage, taking place this Saturday, September 5, starting in Jaén. The first part is relatively easy, forming a loop through Mancha Real and beyond, before returning via the same route and through Jaén. The difficulty, however, lies mainly in the final part of the stage, featuring two Category 2 climbs and a summit finish on a Category 1 climb. It all begins with the Puerto de Los Villares, followed about 40 kilometers later by the base of the Puerto de Locubín (in between, the riders will compete for the intermediate sprint at Castillo de Locubín), before quickly tackling the final climb toward Sierra de la Pandera, a Category 1 climb.

Sunday, September 6, 2026 – Palma del Río > Córdoba – 189.7 km

Sunday’s stage, starting in Palma del Río, will be less mountainous. Riders will face three third-category climbs, beginning with the Puerto de la Forestal after passing through Posadas. After passing through Villaviciosa de Córdoba, the race turns left to circle the lake and return to the same town, climbing the Alto de Villaviciosa de Córdoba before briefly retracing its steps and turning left. Before reaching Córdoba, the riders will climb the Puerto Artafi and compete for the intermediate sprint in Santa María de Trassierra.

After this second week, the riders of the [[2026 Vuelta a España]] will have another chance to rest before tackling the final week of this Grand Tour!

16/ Tuesday, September 8, 2026 – Cortegana > La Rábida (Palos de la Frontera) – 181.1 km

Starting from Cortegana, this 16th stage of the Vuelta a España 2026 will head toward the coast and finish in La Rábida (Palos de la Frontera), so it stands to reason that the stage profile will consist mostly of descents and flat terrain. As such, the riders will face no difficulties on this course, and after the intermediate sprint in Villarrasa, the stage finish will likely also come down to a sprint!

Wednesday, September 17, 2026 - Dos Hermanas > Seville - 185 km

This Wednesday, the stage profile is even flatter than the previous day’s, between Dos Hermanas and Seville. The stage circles the finish city, and the intermediate sprint will take place at the end of the stage, in San José de la Rinconada.

Thursday, September 10, 2026 – El Puerto de Santa María > Jerez de la Frontera – individual time trial – 32.1 km

This Thursday, September 10, an individual time trial is on the schedule for the Vuelta a España 2026, between El Puerto de Santa María and Jerez de la Frontera, covering a distance of just over 32 kilometers. This stage is tailor-made for time trial specialists, with a nearly entirely flat course profile.

September 19, Friday, 2026 - Vélez Málaga > Peñas Blancas (Estepona) - 210.8 km

Following the previous day’s individual time trial, the riders will set off from Vélez Málaga for this final stage before the weekend break—a hilly stage culminating in a mountain-top finish at the summit of a Category 1 climb, Peñas Blancas (Estepona).

In between, the riders will first follow the flat coastal road before heading inland to tackle two Category 2 climbs: the Puerto de Las Abejas and the Puerto del Viento. After passing through Ronda, they will head back toward the coast, reaching it at San Pedro Alcántara. They will then follow the coast to the intermediate sprint in Estepona, before tackling the final 18.8-km climb at an average gradient of 6.5% and a maximum gradient of 15%.

September 12, 2026 (Saturday) – La Calahorra > Collado del Alguacil – 186.8 km

The penultimate stage of the Vuelta a España 2026 will be a challenging mountain stage starting in La Calahorra. The riders will reach the summit of the first climb, the Puerto de los Blancares, after 50.7 kilometers.

The riders will then head toward Granada before turning back east. They will complete a first loop, during which they will climb the first-category Puerto de El Purche. They will then return to Granada, before heading back in the same direction and thus climbing this first-category pass once again. This time, they do not return to Granada but head toward the intermediate sprint in Güéjar Sierra, before returning to the starting point of this loop by climbing the Puerto de El Duque, also a Category 1 climb. They then pass through the intermediate sprint again and continue on to the final climb to Collado del Alguacil (hors catégorie, 8.3 km at no less than 9.8% / maximum 22%).

Sunday, September 13, 2026 – Granada > Granada – 112 km

The very last stage of the Vuelta a España 2026 loops around Granada—or, more precisely, makes several loops.

First, after the start, a mini-loop through Churriana de la Vega before returning very close to the start and continuing further on through Huétor Vega and Ogíjares, then heading back up through Alhendín, Gabia Grande, Santa Fe, and Atarfa, before returning to Granada. In the city streets, two final loops await the riders: first following the black arrows, then the red arrows, and finally the green arrows. It is at the end of this stage—which will likely finish in a sprint—that the winner of the 2026 Vuelta a España will be officially announced, even though the grueling mountain stage from the previous day will have already determined the overall standings!
