Just before the start of the Vuelta a España 2014, the Tour of Spain which will start this Saturday in Jerez de Frontera, I offer you the unique opportunity to do a visual flashback on the Tour de France 2014.

From a sports perspective it was a very nice Tour, a bit less from a weather perspective, but despite that there were numerous nombreuses to produce some nice images, both in photo and in video!

In this article you'll of course not find any video images of the race itself (sorry for that, if you expected to find that here) since they are exclusive to the official broadcasters of the Tour de France. However, you'll find photos, taken at the starts or the finishes of the stages and sometimes on the side of the road for certain stages and especially the individual time trial at the end of the Tour. You'll also find videos which will allow you to virtually revisit the roads of the Tour de France 2014, whether you are looking for the race route on one of the climbs in the race, to soak up the good atmosphere which reigns in the Tour and especially with the huge crowds on the two first English stages in the Yorkshire or maybe because you want to see whether someone you know or maybe yourself are standing on the side of the road! Would you like to know how it is to be driving a car in the Tour? You'll be served as well in that case because you'll see the roads we've been on, the danger the people on the side of the road represent for us, when they move ahead while we are passing the advertising caravan or when they are crossing the road, and many other details one can usually only see when you work in the Tour!

And with the videos which have been published on Kinomap (starting from the 7th stage), you'll even be able to train on the roads of the Tour, as you might have discovered at the start of the Tour.

Let's now have a detailed look at the different stages of the Tour de France 2014:

1/ Leeds > Harrogate

At the most northern Grand Départ in the history of the Tour de France, we clearly saw that Yorkshire prepared itself to receive the biggest cycling race in the world in style, and the people living in Yorkshire massively came out to see the race!

And that's what you can see again in the videos and photos below:

>> watch the photos of the 1st stage of the Tour de France 2014 - Leeds > Harrogate

2/ York > Sheffield

And that was again the case for the second stage, which brought the riders from York to Sheffield!

>> watch the photos of the 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2014 - York > Sheffield

3/ Cambridge > London

In the 3rd English stage, which started in Cambridge and brought the riders to the capital city, London, I unfortunately don't have a video but one hundred photos taken at the start in Cambridge are available below!

4/ Le Touquet-Paris Plage > Lille (Villeneuve d'Ascq)

In this first French stage we clearly saw a difference in number of spectators on the side of the road, but also in the weather which already degraded a bit.

Hereunder you'll find a video of a big part of the race route, and 3 photos taken at the finish at the stade Pierre Mauroy:

5/ Ypres > Arenberg Porte du Hainaut

The bad weather at this stage, which started in Ypres in Belgium prevented me from taking out my GoPro camera to film on the race route and I haven't been able to take any photos either.

6/ Arras > Reims

On the 6th stage between Arras and Reims, the rain was rather present as well, but you can still watch the videos of this stage, behind the rain drops!

7/ Epernay > Nancy

For the 7th stage, you can discover two videos on the race route: the first one between Epernay and just after Sainte-Menehould (via Châlons-en-Champagne) and the second one between Sainte-Menehould and about thirty kilometers before Nancy, crossing in front of the impressive Ossuaire de Douaumont, close to Verdun.
You'll also discover about ten photos taken at the finish in Nancy.

8/ Tomblaine > Gérardmer

For this 8th stage, you can discover the video images between Epinal and the La Mauselaine climb in Gérardmer, and 34 photos at the finish in Gérardmer ... where it was raining again!

9/ Gérardmer > Mulhouse

You can discover almost the complete 9th stage: from Gérardmer down to Wittersheim, about ten kilometers out of Mulhouse where the stage finished. At that finish, you can find about ten photos:

>> watch the photos at the finish of the 9th stage of the Tour de France 2014 - Gérardmer > Mulhouse

10/ Mulhouse > La Planche des Belles Filles

For this 10th stage, which visited for the 2nd time in the history of the Tour La Planche des Belles Filles, you can check out about thirty photos taken at the start:

>> watch the photos at the start of the 10th stage of the Tour de France 2014 - Mulhouse > La Planche des Belles Filles

11/ Besançon > Oyonnax

For the 11th stage, the riders went from Besançon to Oyonnax and you can discover or rediscover the race route of this stage almost in full in the video below, from the start in Besançon. You'll also find 8 photos at the finish in Oyonnax.

>> watch the photos at the finish of the 11th stage of the Tour de France 2014 - Besançon > Oyonnax

12/ Bourg-en-Bresse > Saint-Etienne

Between Bourg-en-Bresse and Saint-Etienne, I've only been able to use my GoPro camera between the start in Bourg-en-Bresse and a place just after Regnié-Durette, but you can also discover about fifteen photos taken at the finish in Saint-Etienne:

13/ Saint-Etienne > Chamrousse

The day of the 13th stage, between Saint-Etienne and Chamrousse, I didn't go to the finish. Therefore you can discover a few photos at the start below, as well as some photos taken at La Grand Croix, at the exit of a round about. Apparently the direction to take at that roundabout was not very clear because several cars and motors took the round about on the left side while it was much shorter on the right side since the race route continued straight with the exit of the round about being slightly on the right. When the breakaway arrived, Jens Voigt (Trek Factory Racing) was the only rider to take the round about on the right but, when he saw what the other riders of the breakaway did, he thought the race route continued on the left and he thus continued on the round about, ending up in the opposite direction running into the other riders of the breakaway. After having turned around, the German rider continued and got back on the breakaway.

14/ Grenoble > Risoul

On the stage between Grenoble and Risoul, you can watch a video of the start of the race route, between Grenoble and Bourg d'Oisans. In Grenoble, you can clearly see that it's dangerous to cross the road of the Tour de France. Despite the warnings about this danger, there are always people who cross the road anyway ... without watching out whether cars are coming up!

You can also discover some photos at the start of the stage in Grenoble and close to Bourg d'Oisans:

>> watch the photos at the start of the 14th stage of the Tour de France 2014 - Grenoble > Risoul

15/ Tallard > Nîmes

For the stage which started in the small village of Tallard, close to Gap and known for its castle, you can discover a video of about 200 kilometers on the race route of the stage, down to Beaucaire. Furthermore, you can watch the photos taken at the start in Tallard. Indeed, the rain just before the finish in Nîmes and a difficult access to the finish made me decide not to take my photo camera out.

>> watch the photos at the start of the 15th stage of the Tour de France 2014 - Tallard > Nîmes

16/ Carcassonne > Bagnères-de-Luchon

On the mountain stage between Carcassonne and Bagnères-de-Luchon, you can discover around 140 kilometers of the race route in video, since I decided to activate my GoPro camera mainly on the climbs of the stage.

In the first video you'll find the race route from Pailhès to Moulis via the feeding zone in Lafont and the sprint in Saint-Girons:

And in the second video you can find the main climbs of this stage: with the Col de Portet-d'Aspet, the Col des Ares and the Port de Balès:

At the finish in Bagnères-de-Luchon it's always quite difficult to take any photos, because of the absence of light in the street where the stage finishes. However, you can find some photos which were worth the section above and with the link below.

17/ Saint-Gaudens > Saint Lary - Pla d'Adet

For this stage, you can discover a video of the final part, with the Col de Peyresourde, the Col de Val Louron Azet and the climb towards Pla d'Adet. After the video you can also discover a few photos at the finish of the stage.

>> watch the photos at the finish of the 17th stage of the Tour de France 2014 - Saint-Gaudens > Saint-Lary - Pla d'Adet

18/ Pau > Hautacam

For the stage between Pau and Hautacam, you can discover the end of the race route in 3 videos and the photos at the finish:

The first one with the climb and the descent of the Col du Tourmalet:

The second one which follows the descent of the Tourmalet:

And finally the last one, with the climb of Hautacam and as a bonus, some images of what happens once we've taken the derivation at a few meters from the finish line:

>> watch the photos at the finish of the 18th stage of the Tour de France 2014 - Pau > Hautacam

19/ Maubourguet > Bergerac

While we thought that the Tour de France had enough of rain already, this fore-last stage in line brought back lots of rain again. Therefore, I don't have any photos of this stage but a video which shows a part of the amount of rain which fell that day:

20/ individual time trial Bergerac > Périgueux

For the time trial, you can discover the complete race route, in two videos (the first 20 kilometers and the remaining part; at the start of the first video you can unfortunately see that the fountain which was close to the start ramp brought some humidity in the case of the GoPro camera. That's why the image is partly unclear ... this completely disappears after a few kilometers though), and 50 nice photos of the riders in their individual effort:

21/ Evry > Paris

The last stage of the Tour de France is always a bit more ceremonial than interesting from a sports perspective. This was again the case this year, but for us it's always fun to get back on the Champs-Elysées and the final circuit in Paris, where the roads are fully ours as well.

You can thus discover below the video with the visit of the Parisian circuit, including the zig-zag going back down the Champs-Elysées, as well as 25 photos, taken during the last laps on the circuit and after the finish of this final stage.

I hope you appreciate these photos and videos of the Tour de France 2014 as much as I've liked producing them :)
As usual, you'll be able to find the rumours on the race route of the Tour de France 2015 early September!!! In the mean time, you can find the photos of the Classic de l'Indre 2014 on Sunday, and next week I'll take care of the www.tour-poitou-charentes.com web site, the official web site of the Tour Poitou-Charentes!

  1. Without accidents, Le Tour 2014 would have been very different. Alberto Contador would have won, (I HOPE), but not without a mighty struggle against Nibali. Well, the Vuelta. Is Contador fit enough? Nairo Quintana must be the man to beat. Exciting times.
