As usual at the end of December, velowire.com today gives you a first look at the Paris-Nice 2013 race route, 71th edition of the race to the sun, based on the latest rumours!

Even though all stage cities are not known yet as of today the official route will be announced only on 7 February, we'll see that based on what we know right now, we already get a good idea of the overall look of what will be the first European race of the UCI WorldTour in 2013.

In this article you'll find, until the official presentation on 7 February 2013 at the Conseil général des Yvelines in Versailles, the latest rumours about the Paris-Nice 2013 race route, thanks to the updates which will follow.

So here are the 7 stages and the prologue (depending on the distance there could, like last year, be 8 stages instead) of Paris-Nice 2013:

Sunday 3 March 2013 - P/ Houilles

In March 2012, you could already read here that Paris-Nice will start in the Yvelines department until 2017 and in this article, I already announced the start of Paris-Nice 2013 from the Saint-Germain-en-Laye arrondissement.

In this arrondissement, Houilles was chosen to organise the prologue of the 71st edition of the Race to the sun, as Jean-Luc of the Gazette Montfortois discovered in the summary of the Conseil Municipal meeting of the city on 11 October 2012.

Since than, the city of Houilles also published a request for volunteers which confirmed this information once again.

As of today, the length of this prologue is not yet known and it is thus difficult to say whether it'll be a prologue (maxi 8 km) or a first stage. For now, since the city calls it a prologue and since this time trial seems to have its start and finish in Houilles, we consider it to be a prologue.

Monday 4 March 2013 - 1/ Saint-Germain-en-Laye > Nemours

The next day, there will be another stage start in the Yvelines department. For now, the city where that start will take place remains unknow but since the Conseil général des Yvelines mentioned the Saint-Germain-en-Laye arrondissement to be the organisor of the grand départ of Paris-Nice in 2013 this could mean that the start of the first stage will also be in one of the cities of this north eastern part of the Yvelines department.

UPDATE UPDATE Sunday 20 January 2013: And that now got confirmed by La Gazette Montfortois as well which says that the start of this stage will be in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

In any case, in October already, the La République du Centre newspaper announced that this stage will finish in the city Nemours (and it confirmed this information once again early this month).

UPDATE UPDATE Sunday 20 January 2013: From the start in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the riders would first go south-west via Villepreux and Beynes before heading south via Le Perray-en-Yvelines and Rambouillet. Heading south-east via Dourdan, Etampes and Malesherbes they arrive at the foot of the first small climb of this 71st edition of Paris-Nice! In total, the stage should be a little bit under 200 kilometers long.

Tuesday 5 March 2013 - 2/ Vimory > Cérilly

Still according to La République du Centre, and more precisely in the article the next day, the mayor Bernardette Absolu of Vimory received a written confirmation saying that the stage on Tuesday 5 March, the second stage of Paris-Nice 2013, will start from her city. The newspaper added that the start of the stage will take place in the Grande-Rue and furthermore that except for any last minute changes, the riders will go towards the Allier department, over a flat race route for which the different cities being visited still remain to be defined, especially for the Loiret department.

Two months later, it was again La République du Centre who gave the information about what would follow. Indeed, early this month, the newspaper indicated that the riders will visit Gien (usual start place of Paris-Bourges), and go via Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire (start place of a Paris-Nice stage in 2009), via Autry-le-Châtel and via Cernoy-en-Berry before they head to the finish in Cérilly (which we remember of the final time trial of the Tour de France 2008 [see the photos here] towards Saint-Amand-Montrond).

François Lemarchand, former rider and today responsible for the race route of some of the races organised by ASO, told the newspaper that the stage will be around 200 kilometers long.

Wednesday 6 March 2013 - 3/ Châtel-Guyon > Brioude

Another newspaper of the same group as La République du Centre, La Montagne, announced in July already the start place of the 3rd stage, Châtel-Guyon. Early this month the same newspaper also announced the finish city of this stage, Brioude.

Thursday 7 March 2013 - 4/ Brioude > Saint-Vallier

UPDATEUPDATE on Sunday 30 December 2012: For this stage neither we only know the start nor the finish city are known at this time. Indeed, according to mon43.fr, the city Brioude would also have the opportunity to organise the start of the 4th stage after the finish the day before.
The finish city of this stage remains unknown for now. One thing seems to be sure however, looking at the start place for the next stage, this stage should continue crossing the Auvergne, probably heading towards the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
UPDATE UPDATE Sunday 20 January 2013: As Lightar already indicated in a comment below on 12 January, the city of Saint-Vallier (in the Drôme department) announced it will be the finish city of this stage. Since the publication of this comment, the city also published an article on its website which confirms this information and also the one about the start in Brioude. According to the city, the stage would be 199.5 kilometers long and the peloton will arrive in Saint-Vallier via the Galaure valley, (...) and the RD51 tunnel and end up on the avenue Buissonnet where the finish will be at 4.05PM at the level of number 10.

Friday 8 March 2013 - 5/ Châteauneuf-du-Pape > Montagne de Lure

For the 5th stage, the day after the official presentation of the Tour de France 2013 race route, we already knew thanks to an article by Alpes 1 that a stage finish was planned at la Montagne de Lure where Alberto Contador took back the yellow jersey in Paris-Nice 2009. Alpes 1 did not however announce when that finish would take place, but ...

... a few days ago, on Facebook, the Office de Tourisme de Châteauneuf-du-Pape announced the start place of this 5th stage to be the city which is probably most well known for its viticulture, but also the destination of this stage, the Montagne de Lure.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape>Montagne de Lure

Saturday 9 March 2013 - 6/ Manosque > Nice

For the last two stages, I didn't find any information so far. However, since the riders will already be nearby, we could think that this forelast stage would finish in Nice, as it was the case in 2012. However, we could also think of a different scenario, like in 2009 when Paris-Nice visited the top of the Montagne de Lure for the last time, with an intermediate stage (at that time between Manosque and Fayence followed by a stage Nice > Nice over 119 kilometers).

UPDATE UPDATE Sunday 20 January 2013: without even knowing it turns out that I was not far from the truth since we now know that this stage will take place between Manosque and Nice, over a distance of 220 kilometers, with the climbs of the Côte du Bols de Rousset, the Côte des Tuillères, the Côte du Mont Méaulx, the Côte de Cabris and the Col du Ferrier. There would be a sprint in Flayosc and in Tourrettes-sur-Loup (where in 2010 one of the Paris-Nice had its finish).

That's what we learn on the blog "Il piccolo diavolo" which managed to get hold of the time- and route schedules of the last 3 stages of Paris-Nice 2013.

Sunday 10 March 2013 - 7/ Nice > Col d'Eze

UPDATE UPDATE Sunday 20 January 2013: In the same way, we don't have any details about this last stage either, but it could discover that - like in 2012 - well this stage will be a time trial, potentially decisive, between Nice and the Col d'Eze, over a distance of 9.6 kilometer (exactly the same route as in 2012). The city of Eze actually also confirmed this on its website.

According to La République du Centre early this month, there would be a final finish in Nice on Sunday the 10th, but it's not clear whether the newspaper said so based on any concrete information or whether that sentence was just to say that the last stage of Paris-Nice 2013 will be on Sunday 10 March 2013.

  1. J'aime bien Paris-Nice.

    http://www.yvelines.fr/publication/magazine-hiver-2013/
    page 43.
    Page 44, ils parlent des animations du 2 au 4 mars donc a priori comme depuis 2010, le lundi le départ sera aussi des Yvelines;

  20. I am a Canadian li?ing in France for 2 years. I live in Roquebrune Sur Argens and would like to ride to and watch the climb on the Col de Vence. Do people ride parts of the route following the pro riders. Where would be a good place to start riding if I were to drive, ride to the summit then ride back to the car. I would want about 60 km, 30 to summit 30 back to car.

    Merci beaucoup! :)
