I already announced it on 30 November 2008 and it has been confirmed on 29 October this year: the Tour de France 2012 will start in Liège.

While ASO than announced that all details would be announced during the press conference organised on Thursday 18 November 2010 at noon in the Palais provincial of Liège in Belgium, that is tomorrow, they actually already made everything public today ...

The web site letour.fr is giving away the information

Indeed, when you know the structure of the adresses being used on the letour.fr web site, it's not that difficult to find the page about the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2012 which will be pushed to letour.fr's front page tomorrow ...

On this page we discover that the rumours announced in my previous article turn out to be right, knowing that ASO didn't confirm the finish city of the second stage on Monday 2 July 2012 yet.

In the usual "letter of the Tour", Christian Prudhomme reminds for this Grand Départ from Liège the existing relations between ASO and the Province of Liège, including especially the classics, the Flèche Wallonne and La Doyenne (Liège-Bastogne-Liège), and of course the Tour de France (as a reminder: the Grand Départ of the 2004 Tour de France already took place in Liège and several stages have had their start or finish there).

Poster Grand Départ 2012 Tour de France in LiègeIn his letter, André Gilles, President of the Collège de la Province de Liège, says to be enthusiastic and proud to be able to welcome a new Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2012, while reminding the expertise the Province has n the organisation of large-scale cultural and sports manifestations and of the Province's modern facilities.

His letter ends with a sentence indicating that many people in the Province of Liège will help making the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2012 a success: All of them will be present to remind our French friends, and all the lovers of cycling, that the Tour de France is really at home in the Province of Liège, so that the race will get off to a good start.

The programme of the Grand Départ of the 2012 Tour de France

The programme of the Tour de France 2012 Grand Départ is as follows:

Wednesday 27 June 2012 - opening of the race headquarters (permanence) and the press centre
These will be at the Halles de la Foire Internationale de Liège (FIL), on the Quai de Wallonie

Thursday 28 June 2012 - team presentations of the Tour de France 2012
This presentation will take place in Liège.

Saturday 30 June 2012 - prologue in Liège
The prologue of the Tour de France 2012 will take place in the city of Liège over a 6.1 kilometer distance.

The gathering location of this prologue will be, as announced by the RTBF, in the Parc d'Avroy with the start podium in the Avenue Rogier. The race route will be completely flat and identical to the one used in 2004 when the Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara took the first yellow jersey.
The riders will than continue north on the Boulevard d'Avroy and the Boulevard de la Sauvenière before they arrive on the Quai Roosevelt following the Meuse river. They will turn left at la Batte (after a bit more than 3 kilometers) towards the Place Saint-Lambert and its Palais des Princes-Évêques. They'll than follow the Boulevard de la Sauvenière and the Boulevard d'Avroy in the opposite direction towards the finish line where they'll get after 6.1 kilometers.
The race route of the prologue of the 2012 Tour de France in Liège

Sunday 1st of July 2012 - first stage - Liège > Seraing
The first stage, over a distance of 180 kilometers, will also start from the Parc d'Avroy. However, as usual an official start ceremony will take place a bit further on, at the Place Saint-Lambert in front of the Palais des Princes-Évêques which the riders will have seen already the day before during the prologue (well, it's not sure they really pay attention to that during the race!).

As indicated by the RTBF, this stage's route will be hilly and will follow the roads which are usually used for the spring classics. The 180 kilometer distance is obtained by going down to the south-east limit of the Province of Liège while visiting Spa-Francorchamps where the riders will be close to the famous car race circuit. After a short visit of the Province of Luxembourg, via the Baraque de Fraiture, which is one of the highest points of Belgium with its 652 meter altitude, and Hotton, the riders will go back north towards the finish in Seraing which will be in front of the Cristalleries du Val Saint-Lambert.

Monday 2 July 2012 - start of the second stage in Visé
For the second stage, on Monday 2 July 2012, ASO only indicates the start city, Visé, precising that this city has never received the Tour de France before. However, as indicated in my other article it is very well possible that this stage finishes in Tournai and that the stage start on Tuesday 3 July 2012 will take place Orchies in the north of France.

The Province of Liège already celebrates the Tour's Grand Départ

On its web site, the Province of Liège announces that tomorrow night, after the official presentation of the Tour de France 2012 Grand Départ, there will be an exclusive but free concert, with Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault assisting to it. 6. c'est normal que le départ soit prévue si tot car c'est l'année des jeux olympique et donc ASO veut laisser plus de temps de repos avant la course élite des JO .
