Just like in 2008 (click here for my photos of the prologue in Amilly and click here to see all information about Paris-Nice 2008), the Race to the Sun will not start in Paris (Issy-les-Moulineaux) -as it used to do up till 2007- in 2009 but from Amilly.

This article presents non official information about the route and the stages of Paris-Nice 2009. According to the La Provence newspaper the official route will be presented on
Thursday 29 January 2009 at 11.30AM in Paris.

The first stage of Paris-Nice 2009: individual time trial in Amilly - Sunday 8 March 2009

According to the La République du Centre newspaper the city in the Loiret will organise the prologue of the 67th Paris-Nice on Sunday 8 March 2009!
Thor HushovdThis would be an individual time trial over about 9 to 10 kilometres (the track will thus not be the same as in 2008 because this year it was a real prologue with only 4,6 kilometres) ... so it will actually not really be a prologue because the official definition says the distance of a prologue does not exceed 8 kilometres.
In 2008 the prologue in Amilly was won by Thor Hushovd (photo).

A hesitating attitude of Issy-les-Moulineaux' town council, which would not have answered quickly enough is being mentioned by La République du Centre as the reason for the second start in row from Amilly instead of returning to the town where Paris-Nice's organiser, Amaury Sport Organisation, is based (currently at 2 rue Rouget de L'Isle but soon at 253 quai de la Bataille de Stalingrad).

Amilly however answered quick enough and positively to A.S.O. to become once again the start place of the Race to the Sun and it's deputy mayor, Jean-Pierre Door, already indicated that A.S.O. could well show its gratitude by giving the city a stage finish and -start in the Tour de France 2010.

The second stage: Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire > La Chapelle-Saint-Ursin - Monday 9 March 2009

La-Chapelle-Saint-Ursin, © http://mairiechapellesaintursin.nuxit.netWhile the first stage in 2008 would normally also have started in Amillyfootnote, the start of this stage in 2009 is planned in Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire, known for its castle, with a finish in La Chapelle-Saint-Ursin (photo) in the Cher.

La Chapelle-Saint-Ursin has received another Paris-Nice stage in 2004, with a stage start from the Place de la Mairie. In 2009, the finish seems to be planned close to the football stadium and the party hall, probably with two crossings of the finish line and a local circuit via Bourges and Marmagne.

The third stage: Orval > Vichy - Tuesday 10 March 2009

The next day the riders would start from Orval, at about 50 kilometres south (and close to Saint-Amand-Montrond, where the last time trial of the Tour de France 2008 finished). La Nouvelle République published this information early August already without however giving any further information about the finish place of this stage.
Complexe thermal des Dômes in Vichy - © TejAccording to the cycling club l'Avenir Cycliste de Cusset this stage would finish in Vichy (photo). The AC de Cusset even indicates that the riders will come from Vendat, the red arch indicating the last kilometer would be built on the bridge over the dam and the finish line will be placed on the Allée des Ailes near the Crédit Agricole.

The fourth stage: Vichy > Saint-Etienne - Wednesday 11 March 2009

Again according to the AC de Cusset, this stage would start at the roundabout close to the Darragon stadium in Vichy and go towards Saint-Etienne after having passed through the streets of Vichy. This stage's real start would be in Cusset.

The fifth stage: Annonay > Vallon-Pont-d'Arc - Thursday 12 March 2009

Vallon-Pont-d'Arc - © VpeThe day after the presentation of the Tour de France 2009, the Dauphiné Libéré newspaper announced that the Ardèche will not only have a Tour stage finish in Aubenas (Bourgoin-Jallieu > Aubenas stage) but also a Paris-Nice stage in 2009.

According to the information of the newspaper, which is based on declarations of Pascal Terrasse - député in the Ardèche and president of the Conseil Général - it would be a 100% Ardèche stage, between the most densely populated city of the Ardèche, Annonay and the small touristic town Vallon-Pont-d'Arc (photo) with a symbolic visit of Saint-Félicien, historic home of the l'Ardéchoise cyclosportive.

The sixth stage: Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux > Montagne de Lure - Friday 13 March 2009

According to Le Dauphiné of November 25th and France 3 Rhône-Alpes-Auvergne this stage would start in the center of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux. This information would have been confirmed by the city's mayor, Jean-Michel Catelinois and by A.S.O.
The city where the stage would finish remains unknown since A.S.O. would have said that this is the only stage which will have a completely new route and didn't want to give any further information on this stage except that it's going south (what else is new ;-).Fayence - © ViranyLe Dauphiné thinks it will be a mountain top finish in the Vaucluse, but probably not on the Mont Ventoux as in 2008.

The La Provence newspaper on Thursday 15 January said that the official route would be announced on Thursday 29 January at 11.30AM in Paris and that the race would visit the Montagne de Lure. This will therefore most probably be the finish of this sixth stage.

The seventh stage: Manosque > Fayence - Saturday 14 March 2009

On 11 December Var Matin announced that the stage on Saturday 14 March 2009 would finish in Fayence (photo), apparently after another city canceled its status as a finish city.

The same article also says the riders will come from Seillans, pass through the village for the first time going up to Mons, Callian, followed by Montauroux, before going back to a plain part and the finish in front of the la Brèche parking.

To give you an idea of how the end of this stage could look like I made a drawing of it in a map on Google Maps which is shown below.
Fayence
If you prefer to see the map directly in Google Maps, you can click here or on the map.

Furthermore, the riders will be back in Fayence on 5 July 2009 during the Monaco > Brignoles stage of the Tour de France with a sprint in front of the station according to Var Matin.

On Saturday 3 January 2009, Var Matin published a summary of the last meeting of Fayence's town council during which Philippe Fénocchio, sports representative, ask to approve the budget which is necessary for the stage finish (25.000€).

Finally in its 12 January 2009 edition, Var Matin announced the finish city of this seventh stage, often decisive.
The article is especially about the preparations of Paris-Nice in Fayence and quite indifferently (between brackets) says the stage will start in Manosque in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

The eighth and last stage: Fayence ?? > Nice - Sunday 15 March 2009

According to Var Matin Fayence would be ville-étape and in that case the last stage would also start in this city in the Var. In its article published on 3 January, Var Matin still announces Fayence will be ville étape but apart from that the article only mentions the stage finish the day before this stage. Therefore, this very last stage might start somewhere else than in Fayence. The stage finish will as usually be on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice!

Finally I have drawn all this in a map on Google Maps and you can see the result below.
For the time being it's just simple straight lines between the start and finish cities but as soon as the detailed route becomes available, I'll try (if I have enough time to do so) to draw the detailed tracks.

If you prefer to see the map in Google Earth, you can simply click the following link: Paris-Nice 2009 route in Google Earth.

voetnootDue to heavy wind the start of the first stage of Paris-Nice 2008 has been moved to La Chapelotte, in the Cher, thus reducing the stage to only 93,5 kilometres instead of the 184,5 kilometres which were initially planned.

    LU 09 mars - Etape 2 - Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire - La Chapelle-Saint-Ursin
    MA 10 mars - Etape 3 - Orval - Vichy
    ME 11 mars - Etape 4 - Vichy - Saint-Etienne
    JE 12 mars - Etape 5 - ??? - ???
    VE 13 mars - Etape 6 - ??? - Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux
SA 14 mars - Etape 7 - ??? - Fayence avec le col de Bourigaille, cat.1 (5,6 km à 6,1 %) et la côte de Mons, cat .3 (2 km à 5,7 %) dans la boucle finale. Arrivée parking de la brèche.
    DI 15 mars - Etape 8 - Fayence ? - Nice

    | Franck | Sunday 28 December 2008 om 08h31

    LU 09 mars - Etape 2 - Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire - La Chapelle-Saint-Ursin
