The summary of Paris-Tours 2015

Very quickly after the start of this 109th edition of Paris-Tours at the end of the morning in Chartres a breakaway with no less than 31 riders was formed, after an attack from Alexis Gougeard (AG2R La Mondiale).

With the wind in the back, the average speed was quite high (this edition of the race actually had the fastest average speed in the history (49.677 km/h), and this group managed to extend its gap above 4 minutes. The Cofidis team did a lot of work leading the peloton, trying to bring down the gap on the breakaway, but at 31 and with a good collaboration between the different riders, this was an almost impossible task.

When the breakaway lost 5 elements at about 70 kilometers from the finish, a chasing group of 18 riders The breakaway with 31 riders, including Nacer Bouhanni, the French sprinter for who the Cofidis team tried to bring down the gap.

This was too late however to catch up with the breakaway in which the race got decided in the last of the 3 climbs of the final part of the race. Indeed, in the Côte de l'Epan, Matteo Trentin (Etixx-QuickStep), Greg van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team), Tosh van der Sande (Lotto-Soudal) and Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff-Saxo) managed to get rid of their breakaway companions and when they lost Brutt they went on to the finish line in a group of three.

In the last kilometer, the former winner of Paris-Tours Greg van Avermaet (2011) however had a mechanical problem and the victory was thus decided between Trentin and Van der Sande. Starting the sprint first, Tosh van der Sande exposed himself and Matteo Trentin showed he was the strongest sprinter by beating him on the finish line with one bike length!

After his 2 stage victories in the Tour du Poitou-Charentes and his stage victory in the Tour of Great-Britain, it was the 4th victory of the season for the Italian rider of the Etixx-QuickStep team.
