Yesterday in the Palais des Congrès in Paris the Tour de France 2010 route was finally officially presented.

Predicted since a few weeks already on www.velowire.com and updated to its final version (indeed, I was 100% right!) the night before the presentation, the route was not really a surprise anymore for me and the readers of my blog!

This article presents the different stages, the start and finish cities, the mountains and other climbs which will be part of the stages and the reactions on the Tour de France 2010 route. A Tour which can be seen as a flashback on its own history!

A summary of the Tour de France 2010

If you summarise the 97th Tour de France in a few words you could do that as follows: after a classical Grand Départ from the big Dutch harbour city Rotterdam and after having honoured Eddy Merckx in Brussels we quickly get to a stage which makes you think of the Flèche Wallonne but especially of Paris-Roubaix with the 7 paved zones kasseistroken in the 3rd stage.
The Tour then continues to the Jura towards Les Rousses before getting in the high mountains starting with the Alps towards Morzine-Avoriaz and doing one of the Tour de France 2006 the other way around to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
After the stages which connect the two French mountain areas the 100th anniversary of the first visit of the Pyrenees and the first time mountain stages were part of the Tour de France, 7 years after its creation, are celebrated in style. The starter of the Pyrenees menu is the finish in Ax-3 Domaines. This is followed by a historical finish in Bagnères-de-Luchon where the first Pyrenees stage in the Tour de France history finished, followed by a stage with the 4 big of the Tour, Peyresourde-Aspin-Tourmalet-Aubisque, and a here-we-are-again in Pau.
After a well deserved rest day (if it was only because it comes that late) the final Pyrenees stage is planned, with a second climb of the Col du Tourmalet, this time with the finish line at the top!
At the end of the Tour the individual time trial, which can still influence the general classification, is back, in 2010 over 51 kilometers between Bordeaux and Pauillac.

The Tour in numbers

This Tour de France, with a total estimated distance of 3.596 kilometers, will take place from Saturday 3 July 2010 until Sunday 25 July 2010 and will visit 3 countries: The Netherlands, Belgium and of course France.

During this period the riders will get the following on their menu:
- 1 prologue (Rotterdam > Rotterdam, as an 8 kilometer individual time trial)
- 20 other stages, among which:
    > 9 flat stages
    > 6 high mountain stages of which 3 with mountain top finish (Morzine-Avoriaz, Ax-3 Domaines and Col du Tourmalet)
    > 4 hilly stages
    > 1 individual time trial (Bordeaux > Pauillac, 51 kilometers)
- 2 rest days: Morzine-Avoriaz and Pau

11 new stage cities will receive the Tour de France for the very first time in the Tour history: in their order of appearance on the 2010 Tour de France route these are Wanze (Belgium), Arenberg Porte du Hainaut, Gueugnon, Tournus, Station des Rousses, Sisteron, Bourg-lès-Valence, Bourg-de-Péage, Pamiers, Pauillac and Longjumeau.

The Tour de France not only celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first visit of the Pyrenees but also the 100th birthday of the voiture balai and the 80th birthday of the advertising caravan!
