The queen of the classics, Paris-Roubaix 2018, will take place this Sunday. For the 116th edition of the race, the organisor decided to slightly modify last year's race route: the start has been modified, as well as the first cobble stones sections, with for example the comeback of the Saint-Python section. We still have the same number of cobble stones sections (29) but the total distance on cobbles is a little bit lower than last year, 54.5 kilometers instead of 55. The total number of kilometers of the race remains identical, 257 kilometers, but that's also due to the fact that the kilometer 0 of the race is a bit further from the start location!

In the Hell of the North, any small detail can however come disturb the race for one of the riders or maybe the contrary, help another rider. So, nothing's sure beforehand: Sunday, everything will be decided on the cobbles ... with the Quick-Step riders being the favourites ...

The 29 cobble stones sections of Paris-Roubaix 2018

With a slightly modified race route compared to 2017, the cobble stones sections have been modified as well, especially with the early sections 28 to 23. The difficulty evaluations awarded to this cobble stones sections after the visit by the organisor this Tuesday have been announced in a press release which presents exactly the same evaluations as the last 3 years! Not really surprising when you know that the criteria taken into account when awarding these evaluations are the length (which doesn't change), the irregularity of the cobbles (which doesn't change or at least not much), the general condition of the section (which doesn't change much, especially with similar weather) and its location (which doesn't change).

The Paris-Roubaix 2018 race route on Google Maps

The start in Compiègne on the Place du Général de Gaulle will, according to the time- and route schedule be at 11AM.

After the start, the riders will follow, in Compiègne, the Rue du Dahomey, the Place Saint-Jacques, the Rue Magenta, the Rue Jean Legendre, the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, the Rue Solférino, the Cours Guynemer, the Rue de Soissons, and -contrary to previous years- the Avenue de l'Armistice, the N31, the D546, a visit of the Clairière de l'Armistice, the Francport in Choisy-au-Bac, and the chemin de la Voie de l'Eau before they get on the D130 as usual, where the kilometer 0 will this time be found at 10.6 km from the start location. The riders will follow the D130 before they go off to Saint-Léger-aux-Bois, Pont-l'Evêque and Noyon before they get to, via Ham and Saint-Quentin, the first cobble stones section, the usual section Troisville à Inchy. From there, the riders will discover the new combination of the first sections, with the comeback of the Saint-Python section for example, but also the first ever use of the section Saint-Hilaire à Saint-Vaast. The first feeding zone will still be in the same area but not exactly at the same location anymore, between Briastre and Solesmes. What follows after the Quérénaing section is identical to the usual race route, except for the comback of the Epinette section in Templeuve, which recreates the double section 8.
In total, the riders will have 54.5 kilometers of cobble stones and they can use a second feeding zone in Beuvry-la-Forêt. The finish will, as usual, be in the Vélodrome in Roubaix after a full lap on the track.
